Well I have not tested any IPods except the IPhone, I also tested My Black Berry Pearl, very good and play a number of Video Files.
I am currently almost exclusively using my HTC Hermes 100/AT&T 8525 as my DAP.
For more traditional DAP I have a couple of Phillips. I like them, very solid, the touch screen takes getting use to, but when you get use to it is very logical.
It likes to use Windows Media Player 10 (MTP), to which its device drivers is deeply integrated. But you can transfer files in using it as USB Mass Storage Device; you just have to learn the file system. Slide Show support but no video support. Does have the best FM Radio on the block. Video and Audio Out/Line In when in a Dock.
An HDD DivX Player, which is just a Hard Drive Case with the Audio and Video Hardware to enable you to play Multimedia Files.
Very nice because it is expandable, act as a USB Host and a Stand Alone Video Player when hooked up to a Monitor or TV.
Another USB Host Device that I love is called a Multifunction Car MP3 Player. This plugs into your Lighter/Accessory, act as a USB Host/Line In and transmit your audio via FM signals to your Cars Tuner.
All the above, except the phones have its own remote, which is a pain to keep up with.
The Champion DAP in my estimation and worth every penny of its cheap price is the Best Buy Branded Insignia NS-DV4G.
A bit of an ugly duckling but it plays video, Audio, Slide Shows, FM Radio, Records and it is cheap.
Only draw back is slow USA 1x and only expandable to Maximum 2GB SD Card.
The Creative Zen Vision: M, media player is also a great unit. It has many fo the features that Tuff mentioned, and the iPod copied its menu system:
FM tuner, video (MPEG-1/2/4, WMV, DivX), MP3, WMA, WAV, voice recorder, FM recorder, sync with Outlook for calendar, address book.....etc, picture viewer, 30G byte HD, long battery life, better video quality than the iPod.
In fact iPod folks are paying patent royalties to Creative, in order to use the Creative player menu system.
