...to play in a DVD for viewing. Do I need to have a special type of DVD disc? I've got a CD/DVD writer... do I need a specific software? I've used RecordNow for CD read-write.

The general answer is yes, you will need specific DVD software. You will need DVD-R disks.
Your question is a bit vague. What kind of DVD, your personal DVD, or commercial encrypted movie DVD?Comment

Remember that some DVD players,does not play DVD-R,or DVD+R formats.Comment

In that case, pretty much any DVD copying program should do just fine. Search for one on the net that is freeware. Just doing a DVD disk copy should suffice.Comment
