Hey FOlk

Mi a try get into de portion/part that gives you the option of booting from a different source. Mi can't remember how to do it. MI runnin XP

I think I need to repair the current XP because the updates won't install...

Watch the screen on boot up. It will tell you how to get into 'setup.' Could be F2, DEL, or any combination of keystrokes. Some of the older machines have to exchange the cd for the hard drive inside and change around some jumpers.

You can also create a recovery disk, which gets you to the recovery console of XP.

Some machines also allow some of the function keys to change the boot device. Normally I google on the motherboard manufacturer and the model number screen printed on it if I can't figure out how to get into the bios.

Hey thanks much man. I was pressing F8 instead of delete - remembered cause I"ve done this a couple a times.

I'm now trying to repair the XP weh mi ave installed. I'm a googdle the steps to make sure I do everything right inorder to keep the documents and programs already on the pc.

The third party driver is generally for the CD drive. You should be able to answer yes to that and not destroy any data. Note the keyword 'should.' [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif[/img]

I just reread the original issue. When updates will not install, there is usually a reason given in the pop up window. What does it say? It also downloads an authentication tool before the updates? Does it do that successfully?

The most common reason is the license key although the message will not actually say that. It could be invalid or locked by Microsoft. Unless you have an enterprise license, if you try to install the same license key multiple times (more than three times in my experience) or on multiple computers, their system will flag it and deny any updates. A phone call will usually fix if the key is still valid.

Some of the CDs out there use an image and it does wipe the hard drive. You have no control over it.

Do they still have CD drives requiring their own drivers? Usually the option for third party drivers - a carry-over from Windows NT - is/was primarily for SCSI drives, which the average home owner would never use.

Yep, still exist, and is not only for SCSI. Yu correct that the normal homeowner may not use it, but when dem a look help fi save dem data, one haffi use creative ways of dealing with some of di tings out there. That's where the drivers come into play.

That's interesting. In my years as a network engineer, I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen anyone use the install option for 3rd party drivers. Most of those were tech geeks who loved the SCSI for it's speed and RAID configuration capabilities.
