ATT Tilt mini review

I haven't activated the cell phone part yet, but all I can say..it sweet. One amusing thing...I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't connect to the pc. I did a lot of stuff on the pc, trying to get it work. Next day, scratching me head, I decide to reboot the phone. Guess what? It work! [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif[/img]

One really cool feature, it can read your own handwriting and transcribe it too! So if I want to look up a contact, I could just write the name with the stylus and it will search starting with the first letter, then the next, and so on. If I did know that when I was entering the contacts, it would have been much easier. The WIFI is working well too at the highest level security on the router. Like most Windows based devices/pcs, some items are really intuitive and others like...why them do dat? There are so many features on this thing, I think it was worth the exorbitant amount of money. Just hope the cell portion work just as good. Waiting on a belt clip before ah venture out of the house with it. Me ah treat it like one block o gold. Have you activated the phone part yet?

My contract is soon up and At&T just bought my company so I am toying with IPhone or something lie this. How do they charge you for using the wifi? If you have an unlimited calling plan is using wifi extra?

Nope, in no hurry. Trying to set it up and learn how it work first. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif[/img] I've discovered the transcribe feature now works about 99% since I made some changes to match how I write and the angle I was writing on the screen.

The wifi is free because that is going through my internet connection and not through the cell carrier. I got an unlimted internet plan because I figure I might as well use the phone like it supposed to use. (and the internet plan is the reason the bill going jump higher.) Right now I'm adding links from my favorites on the pc to the phone and testing which ones work. I've found I can read the forums, but not respond, so that kinda' sucks. I think it is either the proxy or the java setup on the phone but haven't had time. I just found a cd that I had with a lot of ringtones, so going through that now.

I will say I liked the iPhone. But what turned me away from it was I hate being limited in what I can do. I can tinker more with the Tilt and not worry about loosing all the music I have now. (See other thread about someone's iPod and loosing their music. My files are backed up in multiple places.) iPhone was $100 more before accessories. So far I've spent $25 (MicroSd card) and $31, belt clip. That arrived yesterday and looks like it will hold up and it fits well. All the other software I've loaded is free off the web. With all the windows stuff out there I can do much more than I can with the iPhone. There are some things apple do better, but the market share for the majority of stuff is still Windoze'.

If you're happy with an iPod, I think the iPhone will work for you. I've never joined the iPod generation. Been happy with the laptop and my cd player. Now with this unit, I've used up quite a few mb of the micro memory card with mp3's. The CD I had for ringtones doesn't work too good. They are MIDI files and the player doesn't work with them too well. (at least I haven't figured out what is wrong yet.)

I found some powertoys on the MS website. One of them brings the phone display over to the pc. It works great! I can click with my mouse like I'm using the stylus. I just entered a few more contacts using the pc's keyboard. This one is called MS remote display for Pocket PC

The MS live search (free) is pretty good. The maps looks exactly like I've been used to in Streets and Trips. GPS is working good, but I need an internet connection for the map data. If the laptop is hooked up, I can do either maps or satellite. It allows me to find restaurants and gas prices nearby. This will be good once I activate the phone. It even allows you to speak: "Mexican Restaurant" It makes a sound like R2D2 from starwars, then it presents a list on the screen. "Mexican? Mexican Restaurant? Mexican something else." Click on what you want and it brings up a list of restuarants. Click on one and it shows the address and phone number. Don't know where it is? click on directions and it maps out the route for you. I will try the GPS routing feature over the weekend with the laptop hooked up. Gas price data is within 48hrs old. That will be helpful when I travel. I'll probably load google maps also. The photos I transferred over look good. Dunno how they will work in the contacts screen yet.

PDF files work, although in order to see anything, you have to zoom in and scroll around. Word works with the the transcribe feature. All of the Voicedial entries I've done work in recognizing my voice but of course it errors out because I don't have the SIM installed. Glad I don't because the amount of times this thing has tried to dial (mistakes or testing) I'd be out almost 100 minutes already!

I'm working on customizing the interface and adding a few utilities to make it easy to access certain software I'll use often. (saves a few stylus clicks.)

Ok, so now for the more technically challenged of us which unit would you recommend? The new phone you are describing sounds so great but so does IPhone. I think it was a happy accident that I figured out the IPhone so easily all by myself, lol. I am fairly technically challenged but not a total idiot if you know what I mean!

If you can get around windows, then the Tilt shouldn't be a problem. Mobile windows is fairly simple, and customizing is actually fun. I added a weather plug in, so now I have the forecast on the front page. One thing I liked about the iPhone was the browser and the multi-touch screen. The MS Internet Explorer in the Tilt isn't even close, although it works. There are rumors that the safari browser on the iPhone doesn't do java, but I can't confirm that. Simple Java works on the Tilt. I'm going to try the Opera Mini browser as it is getting good comments. Have to pay a small fee for that. Tried google maps and IMO, MS live search has the advantage with the speech recognition. I'll keep google for a bit. I want to try GPS with it. Amusing warning on install. Something like...This is a data intensive program. It is suggested to you use an unlimited data plan.

So which phone is better? It is a personal preference IMO. Just like I prefer not to get involved with Apple's way of doing things, the iPod market share is nothing to scoff at. That said, I think the Tilt offers more customization, while the iPhone is more simple but somewhat limited. It is to be seen what the apple sdk kit will allow when it is released. (in terms of third party software.) In the meantime, MS has thousands of titles already out for anything you want to do. Some of them are older versions, but they still work. Same old story as in the desktop world. Apple has its niche, and is better in certain areas, but Windows marches on with third party development and market share.

Very interesting information, thanks! I am trying to put off buying my new phone until late spring when I will need it more so I am gatheirng all the info until then!
