If it's direct tv, and if it's what I think it is, then the answer may be that they are phasing out analog t.v. by 2009, and all t.v. owners (?) should have a digital system. Direct tv is already digital so subscribers need not worry. But since they are in competition with Cable t.v. et. al., they have to offer incentives I guess.

It will still work with canle,because cable have analog and digital channels. The analog channels are th eones you can see without the cable box. those will still work because the changes is only affecting broadcasters,and canle is close circuit. they don't broadcast.
