retrieving files from an old hard drive

My old desktop has a dead mother board. But I believe the hard drive is still good.

Is there some fairly easy way to transfer files from the desktop hard drive to my laptop? [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70384-praying.gif[/img]

The old machine was running 98, the new one has XP.

I have close to 2000 photo files on the old hd an mi miss dem so. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif[/img]

i would suggest taking it into a pc repair shop to have them take the hard drive and place the data onto a portable hard drive . It may be a few hundred (cost of portable hard drive + labour to transfer the data) but it creates a data storage immediately and you get a portable hard drive to back your laptop data onto.

My old computer died last year and I took it to Staples so they could retrieve my old files. They put them on a CD for me.
I think it cost me $40? But well worth it to me for the pictures etal.

Nope I took the whole PC with me and let them do what they had to do.

One of these days maybe I can afford a notebook

Just pull the hard drive out, take it to a computer store, for them to select the correct size, and buy a USB hard drive enclosure for it, at about 25 bucks. You could also buy one online.

Same here, this one came to me from my nephew's wife. She had it in college a few years back and it was loaded with crap. She got a new one and this one was just lying around collecting dust.

One format and reload later... [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/yahoo.gif[/img]

Had it not been for that I'd still be without a computer at all.
