Empress, I have a Customs Declaration Form (Form C5) right in front of me...if you're traveling with a Jamaican passport ("Resident&quot:

If not traveling with a Jamaican passport, Visitors that <span style="font-style: italic">indicate on the C5 Form that they have gifts</span> are required to go through the Declare line.

well this is stupid, IMO. They should have a limit for non-JA passport holders too. Being in line for a hour for 2 t-shirts with the woman bringing in 10 barrels just isnt fair whatsoever.

It is good to have a straight answer to know what the true deal is......but I'm gonna keep standing in the nothing to declare line.

I don't declare going or coming.
Di ungle ting me write pon di paper is the duty free liquor.

Any day they catch me, then fine. I have gotten away with so much already, I'll pay that time.

I used to do the NOT declare. But everytime they made me go to the declare line. They never did make me pay on the items, i.e. household goods, car stereo, etc. So I began to go in the declare line. When they see it's pots and pans, sheets, etc for my home they let me through with no fee. Maybe it's because I am staying 6 months.

A side note: if you travel to Curacao whether you are American or Jamaican, you must have your baggage checked when returning to Jamaica. I guess it's the Caribbean capital for drug trafficking is what the Customs Agent told Ted and me.

if they suspect you of anything, you will be asked to go to the declare section and they will go through all your stuff.

when they find the stuff or if, they can either choose to 'mark' you down if they want to or not. that basically used to mean that if they caught you again, you would be at risk of being charged with something- it wasn't clearly explained what the specific consequences were, but if you travel frequently the staff starts to know you anyways.

they will also, if you don't have receipts, use their duty book to figure out how much duty your goods should attract, but it is like a bad comedy routine. They once tried to charge me retail prices on what were clearly wholesale purchases.

one time I let them calculate the whole shebang before I found my invoice. boy were they p!ssed. But their calculation, was a joke.

Also, no toy guns or water pistols. Ever. If they find those, it is like open season.

A lot of what they decide to charge for or not, there is NO rhyme or reason it's all totally arbitrary. Some times I have been sent to the declare and just went right through, the woman could not care less. One next time, they even wanted to charge me for some new tshirts I just got and a new dress shirt- the woman insisted these were gifts.

I havent lied per se about the stuff I take down cause I really dont carry much with me. Most of my cousins and family members (who I deal with ) dont need much from me. I just wanted to know at what point they will get bringle if they do search my stuff for the 2 tshirts I sometimes carry.

but from monk and jamaican miss' description, it seems like a crap shoot ah well, I will just keep doing what I have been doing.

Mi go through and chat with the men dem too. Smile big at them and ask them how they are doing. It gets you through every time. Only 1 time in about 10 years they sent me to the declare line and that was a oooman. The men agents are a breeze the women are not so easy. lol.
