Seems to me that every day I hear of another life lost to a violent crime in JA and more often they are happening in and around the resort towns. Also, they are happening morning, afternoon, and evening.
I read the Gleaner on-line today that some masked gunmen robbed a group of Salvation Army volunteers (mission workers) in the Kingston area. No one was injured but they were robbed of money, and cell phones.

It does seem like its getting worse.
Poverty, illiteracy and drugs (mainly crack/coke from what I am hearing) causes crime for sure.

Yes, Tanya crack/coke is a wicked thing for sure. It's sad these people get hooked up on it. I've seen people here hooked on it the same way...no matter where you are in the world it makes people do things they normally wouldn't do.
Most of what I hear is not first-hand, so I really dont want to start any false rumors. Also, the crimes I speak of are usually Jamaicans vs Jamaicans, but they are happening in broad daylight in areas that are normally very calm and safe.
It just makes it hard to convince people to visit the island.
Yes, drugs have taken hold of TOO MANY friends and family in JA. I love the island but to visit and see close family and friends going downhill so quicky is just sad. Not to mention the ones that have been lost to drugs too.

What are you thoughts?

I believe you are right, from 10 years ago till now since I've been going to the Negril area, for sure it's gotten much worse

Mi have good Jamaican family friends live in Sav and years ago mi lady fren would walk with mi at night time with no worries, now she don't even want mi to come visit her at night!
Also some "bad" cops around that area shooting up the youths, tooooo sad

I have heard this so many times in the past few years and it makes me incredibly sad. Take Negril for instance. For the most part it is not the local population doing the bad deeds but people from bigger cities coming to prey on the tourists and the local citizens. Very sad.
I hear from someone who does security there that the young guys are causing a lot of problems at the moment with robbings. Have you heard anything about the Mo Bay area as I will be there soon, and someone from the Island said Mo Bay has got bad, when I was in JA in February and thinking of that, is it safe to travel as the locals travel??
