Re: bink - inquiring minds want to know
hi, folks, thanks for thinking of me.
firstly, i was way impressed with Sangster. what a change! very well done.
the "new" road was mostly smooth, but one part of me misses the old road.
negril, ah negril. while i was gone for 8 years and there certainly were changes, it was still "negril" to me.
we were definitely affected by Ike. big seas, big seas all week. one of the sad part of my trip was seeing the beach. omg. so, different than what i was used to.
one day i went to Fun Holiday to rent a car. the manager would be back in a 30 minutes (he was in Belmont). fine, no problem, i will go get some lunch. so, i sat in a table having a wonderful conk salad. i enjoyed the raging sea - boy, she was ugly that day.
but, lord, there was NO beach at all.
one night, i wandered the opposite way down the beach for a bit. again, OMG, i ended up crawling through little sand just to get to Shields.
this makes me really really sad. but, i also know that what Mother Nature takes away, Mother Nature gives back.
it was a very quiet time there. perfect for me. i really needed some time to just r&r after 3+ months of very stressful work.
let's see, i ate at: sweet spice (not what it used to be, but okay) juicy j's (nice fried chicken lunch) and, last nite (for the Man's bd) Sunrise Club - what a marvelous dinner.
i rented a car one day (a toyota "platz" - not an inspiring name, i might say). i took a little trip through my past. checked out the four places i had lived there. all but one had changed abundantly. i really had to wonder if red ground has running water these days and not the need to get up at 4am to fill barrels. LOL
on my first sunday, i told Mister Mister we were going to check out my living places. we turned up the road by the gas station to head up to red ground. the first thing he said was, "are we gonna get outta here alive?". secondily, "babe, i grew up in a ghetto (Grants Pen) and i really do not need to see one again". (damn uppity Kingstonian)
mister mister was there for the first weekend and then needed to head back to kingston for work. so, on wednesday, i got to Mobay and took the Knutsford Express to Kingston. (if you are interested in a a good way to get around the island, check out Knutsford Express). other than having my kidneys rearranged, it was quite pleasant.
we drove back to negril on friday. major storming going on, but so beautiful
it's expensive to [censored]. (ty, Seveen, for your tips)
i say this to all of you as only my thought while there .... i had some true feeling regarding some of the jamaicans on this website and their feeling about us (aka, tourists). i saw lots of kids on the road in their adorable uniforms. all i could think was -- damn, that was condescending.
nobody wants to be poor. of that, i am certain.
so, negril? not certain i will ever go back. it was quite healing to me. the romance was gone and rose colored glasses turned murky. i had some of the best times in my life there and i will hold them dear.
i guess i have truly become a tourist.

Great introspection bink! I appreciate your thoughts. I think I feel pretty much the same way as you about Negril.
I almost don't want to go back and spoil what good memories I have of the place before it turned into such a disneygril atmosphere, and I wasn't even there in the early days. In just the bakers dozen years since I first visited it has gotten too busy for me. Hell, it was too busy that first visit too!
