Re: What/Who influenced your defining yourself a Jamaicaholi
Hi Queenb . Nice to see you lady! We miss you around here!
Oh my the first time I went to Jamaica was back in 97 or 98 I can't remember. I remember my girlfriend talking up Jamaica trying to get me to come along with them. I asked her if it was a place you'd want to live and she said "no" but it's a lot of fun to go there on vacation. I don't think she's been back since then and I got hooked even after the sea urchin episode. We went snorkeling and I ended up with spines down one side of my arm. I thought I'd been attacked by a shark. I cried as it hurt like he@#! Also, back then dreadlocks were not a popular hairstyle here so to see these men in Jamaica with this hair was so different. I remember a familiar Rasta to many that hangs out at Mi Yard walking up in the yard we were staying and I ask him if he was a real rasatafarian. lol....my entire group howled laughing. They could not believe I was asking such a stupid question.....I guess I was nieve and stupid. But I was in such culture shock. Oh yes, the other thing that blew my mind was people sitting around a bar on the cliffs smoking their ting! Only in Jamaica! So one of the gals in the group decided to go back again that year in March and asked me to go....so I went. That trip was also different as I hired a driver and went into the hills and to Mayfield falls. I think it was the 2nd trip that really got me hooked.
Re: What/Who influenced your defining yourself a Jamaicaholi
We had been to Jamaica many times and considered it our vacation place only. I mean we like it because of the party places we visited while there.
We stayed mainly in Ochie in those days and stayed at the old Americana , and loved it there. Many a Great party there,,,Lol
When we started getting out into the country and visted all the sites up that way, Nine Mile,Glistning Waters, Martha Brea, Green Grotto and many more. We fell in love with the country and so many of the people we met.
When my wife went through cancer treatments and I thougth a restfull trip might help her heal and Jamaica was our first choice of course.
So off we went , my daughter , wife and I to Ochie.
It was the best vacation we've ever had.
The staff at the hotel knew my wife was sick and I asked for some special help with her. They came through with more than just help but love and smiles all the time.
Nothing was ever a problem and they bent over backwards to make sure she was looked after.Bless them All.
I gave them all some outstanding tips and gifts in thanks and we returned many times to that hotel afterwards. They showed us some love and respect and we have never forgotten those days or people 25 years later.
As we get ready to battle another health problem in 09 we are going back to JA for a rest and party on NYE.
Jamaica is our vacation , healing , and resting place.
It always will be for us.
And I hope some of my ashes are placed there, where they belong, when my time comes.

Re: What/Who influenced your defining yourself a Jamaicaholi
Just an FYI, this forum got it's name from a dedicated group who used to frequent "West End Wanderings" ??
They coined the phrase "Jamaicaholics"
QueenB, Nanook (Formerly known as IM) OchiGal, Marilyn, Ohliz and many more... When the board went to this new format and added fora, the decision was made to give the 'holics their own yaad.
Stan, thanks for sharing. Hope your health issues improve.

I remember West side Wanderings QK same then as now WW and Trip reports forums were the only ones I frequented. I remember TeaOdom, Murray, who reminds me of Laurel, always kind and sweet. SeatheWorld who wrote one of the first trip reports I read. Atticus,Magic, Shorty, Libby T, Belle, Sammy, OhLiz, Stoli Gal, a nice bunch of folks, hanging out on this board and having a good time.

Re: What/Who influenced your defining yourself a Jamaicaholic?
Back to you Ms Exced. Thank you so much for the hug and compliments and well wishes This is what makes being a part of this board/community so fulfilling you get to meet as well as interact with beautiful and sweet hearted people.
It is also folk like you in your home that make me embrace it as any grateful adopted child would do. I consider Jamaica my Beloved and I hope to always feel as welcome there as I have always felt in the past it is a place and a people that I will treat as if it were my own, with love and respect.
Thank you for your blessing on the next chapter of my life and I send the same to you.
