Hi all. I worked for a cell company for years. The reason to unlock a cell is so that you can use a local sim card. If you use your USA cell based sim card, you will pay the int'l roam charges of your USA cell company. (JA is $1.69 per min avg). Your USA cell company will acommodate unlocking most any phone (some are unlockable) by dialing 611. Unlock code is emailed to you free of charge within 3-30 dyas, as long as you have active service. Once your phone is unlocked, you can obtain a foreign based SIM card (EX: digicel) and then you pay local JA rates for your calls. (you would pay JA to USA rates if you call outside JA- so be aware of that). Simply put- the SIM card IS your cell service. USA SIM=USA prices, JA SIM= JA prices. Hope this was a bit helpful

Some stores sell unlocked phones. Is there a flea market in your area? Or those jack of all trade stores that are dealers for more than one cell carrier, and you can send a fax, get something notarized, and get your computer fixed.

At least around these parts and on several cities on the US east coast, you can find unlocked cell phones at the above named places.

If you use t-mobile, after one year of being a good customer, they will unlock your t-mobile phone for you.

I have Tmobile so they're already on the GSM network.

Once you're a customer for 90 days they will unlock phones for u.

One ting mi like wid dem, they don't ask o questions...mi unlock all my phones with them and couple other ppls fone as well.

when u buyin a phone...skip tri band an mek sure u go wit quad band to be on the safe side

Ebay is the BEST place to get cheap unlocked int'l phones

you see you use the cell site in jamaica to get the voice mail and you get charged

to avoid this forward your usa cell phone to the voicemail number - that causes it to go directly to voicemail and you won't have to use the jamaican cell site

i found this out the hard way - $40 of charges for calls that went to voicemail - and to add injury to insult - some of the voicemail messages had aged off </span>

I have a TMobile prepaid phone that i've had for over a year. I dialed 611 and requested that they unlock the phone which they did while I was on it. I have purchased sim cards in panama, amsterdam, aruba, trinidad as well as jamaica. I also have a Ja phone that i've used in those countries as well because they are already unlocked. Eitherway it a worthwhile investment.

alright, mi well confused

so the easiest option for me would be to take the SIM card out of an old phone that I have (UTStarcom) and have it loaded when in Jamaica.......???

If this is so how I know the Sim card in my old phone is compatible with my Blackberry Curve? Or that doesnt matter?

Or the second easiest option is just to dial 611 and have them unlock my Blackberry and change up the SIM card when I am there instead of purchasing a cheap phone for use while in JA?

For any of these options where the hell is the SIM card located in your phone?

usually when you take out your battery you will see it..btw ur blackberry is more than likely locked and won't be able to work with other sim cards


question..if your Sim card has expired because of non usage can u have them restart it when u in the island or do u have to buy a new sim card?

the thread says most USA phones are locked. You need to either dial 611 to unlock and/or replace the SIM card

I sent a email to Bell and will see if they can give me the code to unlock my phone.
