Hi all. I worked for a cell company for years. The reason to unlock a cell is so that you can use a local sim card. If you use your USA cell based sim card, you will pay the int'l roam charges of your USA cell company. (JA is $1.69 per min avg). Your USA cell company will acommodate unlocking most any phone (some are unlockable) by dialing 611. Unlock code is emailed to you free of charge within 3-30 dyas, as long as you have active service. Once your phone is unlocked, you can obtain a foreign based SIM card (EX: digicel) and then you pay local JA rates for your calls. (you would pay JA to USA rates if you call outside JA- so be aware of that). Simply put- the SIM card IS your cell service. USA SIM=USA prices, JA SIM= JA prices. Hope this was a bit helpful
