Stop at Lyme: A true jerk paradise

It is said that there is an oasis in every desert or location that needs it and for the community of Walkerswood, St Ann, the Lyme Authentic Jerk Centre is that oasis.

<span style="font-weight: bold">The establishment, just a few months old, serves to fill the appetite of persons going to and from the North Coast via Walkerswood. </span>

Proprietor of the business, Mark Perkins said: &quot;The business started on a trial basis, however, it is encouraging to see how it has grown. <span style="font-weight: bold">It is the last place of this nature before you reach Fern Gully and also the only one of its kind going back into Kingston, before you reach Ewarton and those areas.&quot; </span>

He added that Lyme was for persons who want to unwind and entertain themselves, and enjoy a taste of jerk chicken, fish, pork, sausages and curried goat on a weekend.

And for those who would want to test their vocal abilities, karaoke is in place for that purpose.

A number of patrons attested to this notion. &quot;Yes man! It really brings value to Walkerswood, and for those of us who are talented, you can sing, recite or do whatever you can at the karaoke. It really add to the community, we welcome it,&quot; remarked Dahlia Williams, a resident who had just performed at the karoake.

Others felt that Lyme has not only added value to the sleeping rural township but has also provided jobs for persons from within the community, so it adds to the economy of the area.

While employing 14 residents, Perkins told The STAR that his vision is to continue the growth of Lyme into a multifaceted business and to continue to serve the community.

JoJo's adds Jerk


You certainly know JoJo's Farm Market as a great place to stock up on top-quality fruits and vegetables, and no doubt you've enjoyed their tasty soups, sandwiches and salads, <span style="font-weight: bold">but we bet you don't know about those intimate Friday gatherings around the jerk pit.</span> Truth be told, neither did we until recently. But before you descend upon the ever so charming Anna Chin, be warned that <span style="font-weight: bold">it's the city's best kept secret and as such is a relaxed gathering </span>-<span style="font-style: italic"> interpret this to mean a reasonable wait for some of the best-tasting jerked meats and seafood.</span>

<span style="font-weight: bold">The fare includes chicken, lamb, pork, conch and snapper served with roasted provisions and steamed vegetables</span>. <span style="font-style: italic">The jerk pit that fires up every Friday from 12 noon to 10:00 pm </span>was born out of a partnership that did not really work out. Chin, however, still decided to go ahead with the idea and created a <span style="font-weight: bold">rustic setting on the Waterloo Road property</span>, allowing patrons the option of takeaway services or on-the-spot dining. &quot;The Jerk Pit is all about food,&quot; explained Chin, &quot;no loud music, just a nice friendly environment with good food that patrons could enjoy.&quot;

Her concept seems to be working because when Thursday Food visited the property Friday last, it was buzzing with excitement and yes, the patrons all had rave reviews about the food and ambience. &quot; The food is excellent and the lamb is amazing&quot;, said one enthusiastic regular, Wayne McGregor, who spent the evening with a group of friends enjoying the fare. Another patron, Christine Straw, explained what made the Jerk Pit so special to her, &quot;It's a great place to lyme, and you can enjoy good food over drinks and dominoes.&quot;

We headed to the outdoor jerk pit, commanded by chef Somaza Marshall, who was tight-lipped about his jerk formula, but did tell us that the combination of fresh ingredients is what keeps the customers coming back for more. &quot;We pride ourselves in using the freshest herbs and spices and best quality meats and seafood, which make our product superior to our competitors,&quot; commented Marshall.

He went on to explain that the taste and flavour is superior because of the use of pimento wood. &quot;The meat is slowly grilled over pimento wood, which significantly improves the taste and flavour.&quot;

Chin has lots more to offer patrons, and the Jerk Pit will soon be open for business on Saturdays.
