Elsewhere in Jamaica though...it looks like a Canadian dollar will now exchange for/buy about 100 Jamaican dollars. US...about $112. On the street...YARDSTYLE...how much does it cost [JA] for a bottle of beer? Like 400 Jamaican dollars? Some Wray and wata? More? Chicken rice and peas at a local eatery? 1000 Dollars?

WAY back in the day...Like maybe 35 years ago...The Cdn dollar got you about 4 Jamaican dollars/5 for an American buck. The dollar went about 8 times further in Jamaica. 8 times. Most recently I saw the dollar sometimes go twice as far...more often 50% further. But now? Some numbers would be appreciated. I don't know how people manage. But I'll understand better with your help.

To the non-resident in Jamaica, gasoline is affordable. It's around one US$ per liter.

I visit Jamaica 2-3 times each year for the past 3 years. Unlike the 1990s, I have never been asked to sell anyone US$. A number of people have their own foreign-exchange bank account, as well as Jamaican banks issue MasterCard credit cards that residents use in other countries. Tings very different now, man.

DWL Are you serious? This tired old debate again? YOU don't get it...I don't want REAL JAMAICA, or REAL ANYTHING WHEN I'M ON VACATION. I WANT AN ADULT DISNEY WORLD. I WANT FANTASY. I WANT TO DECOMPRESS. I WANT A WEEK OF NOTHING BUT MELTING INTO A BEACH CHAIR WITH A COLD DRINK.
It's my way of recharging my batteries ONCE A YEAR. I WANT IT, I NEED IT, I BUY IT!!!

AND, I CAN'T GET BUCK A$$ NAKED ON A BEACH IN MY HOME TOWN, HOLD A SPLIFF IN ONE HAND AND A COLD RED STRIPE IN THE OTHER...without being hauled off to jail.

And Jamaica, AND REAL JAMAICANS make my stay very pleasurable, because they are experts and very good at their job.

I have plenty of island choices for an A/I vacation, and I choose Jamaica.

Of course, I hate the mega A/I resorts such as the RIUs or the Grand Bahias' they are a blight on the Jamaica landscape. But, there are folks out there that love them, and that is THEIR CHOICE.

I prefer A/Is that have no more than two hundred total rooms, and cater to Couples only... but, Sandals, is not my style.

Let's see? Am I serious? Yes. When I go to Jamaica...I expect Jamaica. It's been that way for close to 40 years and I'm not going to allow some corporate bean-counting suit in the good old US of A to dictate what I'M going to be allowed to do, eat, drink and listen to while *I* am in Jamaica.

You on the other hand don't seem to care where you go just as long as you can unwind. If that works for you...go for it. But I don't want that kind a all-inclusive rip off where I don't get to make the choices and where the choices are limited almost exclusively to things from somewhere other than my actual destination.

I have memories...fond memories of the Jamaicans I've met, socialized with and, in some case hosted reciprocally at my home[s] in Canada. I have very few memories of fellow tourists I met along the way. Those I do remember are the ones who also associated outside of the walls with Jamaican people...and the Jamaican culture.

It's no debate. You can work on your tan. I'll be working on my head, my heart and my soul. And I'll tell you this my friend...there is absolutely NO doubt that if push comes to shove that I can drink and smoke your baxide under the table 8 days a week.

Have fun. When I go anywhere...I want to get out on the streets. AND get away from tourists. There's nothing more boring and off-putting to me than people who only and entirely demand to satiate their whims no matter what. I find all too often that folks like this have and show very little respect to the people serving their needs. But that's just me. Decompressing can be done anywhere.
