my first time to Jamaica was in the pre-internet era, so the only research I could do was the brochures at the travel agent's office ....being young and single at the time, the AI idea seemed great (free beer!!! ) ....I had an OK time, but I remember upon leaving that I felt like I'd missed something ....

the second trip came about because of a great deal at Club Ambiance...but this time I'd researched like crazy (mostly on this very site )...had a <span style="font-weight: bold">great</span> time, but after two days, the buffet got pretty boring....and that was the last time we stayed at a &quot;resort&quot;....

I have a long layover in Malta starting tomorrow and all my planning, including booking the rental car was done online!

my first trip to JA was in 1989 with a mountain bike and panniers. My pan was to ride around the circumference of the island in 30 days. I rode towards Negril but never made it past mile 6 of the beach where I met Jeremiah, the only Jamaican I had met to that point who had not tried to either buy my bike or sell me something. He gave me a mango and within hours I was sitting around a cook fire in Grange with Lee Perry's brother and others....from there I went around the island, through trenchtown, Stone Love on Washington Blvd , Section in the mist of the Blues, downtown rasta yards , tiny dancehalls in the miggle of nowhere...

I still feel blessed by that experience and have only snuck into resorts to use their facilities since then.

I guess resorts have their place for the less adventurous but for me...they are the last resort

I've never stayed at a resort either. My first trip was with a friend to Alligator Pond with a friend who had been there before. I knew nothing about Jamaica cept for that Bob Marley was from there.

I never want to stay at a resort.
