How long can I stay?

Hi everyone

I don't usually have much to say, but today I have a question and I am hoping that someone here can give me some help in locating the information that I require.

I am a Canadian and have been a fequent visitor to Jamaica.
My next visit I would like to have an extended stay in Jamaica, I would like to stay for 9 months. Can I stay as a visitor in Jamaica for that length of time?

I have great health with every visit and my family feels that a long stay (like 9 months) would be very benifical to my health.
Can anyone here help me with my query?

I don't know about Canadians, but Americans are allowed to stay for 6 months....

I was told recently that it was 6 months also for Canadians. But you may be able to go to Miami for the day and return which means you left the country and can stay for the rest of your visit.

i dont think you would have to leave...you would just have to report to local immigration and ask for an extension.

yes, i too was thinking that i may be able to only stay for six months - so that may be it....

thanks i think that it's best if i check with the consulate general in toronto - i would not want to overstay and have problems or not be allowed to enter, because my ticket is booked for to long a time

jamaica miss - good idea, any idea of the cost of a flight to miami from montego bay? or anyone else who can help with that information?

Have you ever been to Cuba? this might be a good time to visit....you could go to Havana for a week or so and then fly back to Jamaica....and you'd see it before the Americans are allowed back and start slappin' up McDonalds and Starbucks all around the place

what a wonderful suggestion - i could meet some of my friends in cuba as i have friends who travel there 3 - 4 times a year

have to take costs into account as i am just a poor peasant who is blessed in being able to get her soul to jamaica when she needs it - thank you jah

i will be checking with the consulate general in toronto on monday and will hear what they have to tell me

i just wanted to share with you

today i called the jamaican consulate as they have not responded to my emails from last week - no surprise there

the surprise was in the way the people talked to me on the phone the woman who answered the phone was rude and not helpful at all

if it was my 1st experience with jamaica and her people i would be changing my plans to go to trinadad and tobago right now she was most uncooperative and made a very bad impression of jamaican peoples

the staff at the jamaican conuslate can not tell me how long i can stay - they say that it is up to the front line immigration officers in jamaica and they will determine my lenght of stay when i arrive

this sounds not right to i - there must be some kind of guidelines - or not????

have any canadians had any experiences with a long visit in jamaica who can give me some guidance - i don't wish to waste time and money by being refused entry into the country because my ticket is for so long

There is another Canadian board member who has been in JA quite some time now. I believe the cut off is 6 months. She does what Jamaica Miss suggested and comes to the states and then flies back to JA again.

If you chose to come to Florida at the 6 mo. mark I would suggest you go to Ft. Lauderdale instead of Miami. Air Jamaica has some good deals sometimes.

so let me get this right...u cawl the representative an dem tell u wat dem ha di law as being...but it no sound right to u .....afta all, if the representative at the Consulate no gi u di ansa U SEEM TO WANT, wat else can be said...oh i figet, frequent VISITORS info can always trump di official spiel...no wonda people tek yaad fi joke

I am a positive person and have faith, because of this my situation has resolved itself - I have been shown a way to get what I need.

As for the original question, the maximum time allowable by immigration is six months. Barring anything untoward, ie insufficient funds, you should be granted that time. Leaving the country and coming is generally easier than paying for and applying for an extension...
