Pictorial, raising turkeys in Negril

My all time favorite neighbor has 4 acres of land that starts at the sea and goes back to the bush, what is still considered country here in Negril.

He started raising turkeys recently and I took some pictures of them.

Turkeys don't lay in nests? and can you eat turkey eggs?

the only thing I know about turkey is to season/baste/roast

what im do with the turkey im raise?

tanya, country chicken don't necessarily lay egg in nest, so i imagine turkey tink dem have the same freedom.

These turkeys lay their eggs in individual piles / nests on the ground which is covered with saw dust. They are very territorial when they get angry they often disturb or destroy eggs that belong to another mother. Sometimes they are bad mind and aggressive.

My Rasta friend started this business to sell the turkeys to individuals to eat. Most of the turkeys you see here, with the exception of the females were sold at Christmas for a good price. He has made back his investment in the first season, has built another coop and is also going to start building a even larger coop up in the hills of Westmoreland where he has even more land. Where they are right now he lets them out once a day to roam in an area in his yard. They love to walk around and make a lot of noise.

BTW, the turkey neck which is sold in most markets here in Jamaica is all imported. Go figure.

I don't know people to eat turkey eggs, but I'm sure somewhere people do, after all people eat ostrich eggs too. But my neighbor just started raising hens for laying and I have eaten 6 of them that he brought to me a couple of weeks ago (along with a basket full of sweet juicy Julie mangoes) and let me tell you the yoke was bright sunset orange in color and they were the nicest tasting eggs I think I've ever eaten. Go figure.

Now you see why he is my all time favorite neighbor. Besides that we often find ourselves sitting for hours playing dominoes with each other.

Hmmm... curry turkey, maybe I'll buy a couple of turkey thighs and give that a try.

turkey eggs are tasty, like duck and goose eggs . . . here in winnipeg, turkey, duck and goose eggs are sold at farmers markets to a select few . . .

Do they cook up like regular eggs.. what about the cholesterol content.. can you bake with them
