surf fishing in negril

Hello. We will be going to negril in a month, and I am going to order a travel rod to bring with me.

I am wondering if i can have some advice on what to bring as far as lures, and also any tips on where to go would be great.

I was thinking a rod with a spin reel, with braided 20lb test, some steel leaders (Need to purchase yet, no idea on length), and spoons (Need to purchase, no idea on size).

Any suggestions?

i suggest you wait until you get to negril to buy lures and stuff - fishing is different there and there is such a variety of fish

you may want to go and chat with the fishermen under the bridge near the roundabout

the time i went fishing they were very helpful

they made my son a rod from a soda bottle, some fish line and a hook - he was ecstatic and he did catch fish

I agree with Seveen.

For all time and money you will spend on getting equipment wich may possibly not work all that well, go talk to the fishermen and perhaps get one to set you up. Use the money you would have spent on rods, reels etc... to give him a little something for helping you out.

check this - Famous Vicent for "line fishing" looks like they used the soda bottle too - no fancy rod needed in jamaica

That looks fun and all, but i am trying to catch barracuda or something more sizable. I am an avid fisherman, and dropping another $30 or $40 on gear will not be a problem at all.

I read on another forum that the cliffs area in the morning and at sunset is a good area if you can get down near the water.

I will check with fisherman near the roundabout like you have said. However alot of things i have read on other forums (Stripersonline mainly)is that there isn't much available in the way of tackle in negril. Of course these were tourists who may not have known where to look. So that's why i'm asking here.
