yeah ... I would never recommend driving to anyone that has not visited Jamaica, and is not familiar with how things roll there.

gosh - someone that is living there for several years, experienced driver in Jamaica is hesitant to drive with her parents across the country ... will only use the 'main highways' - and then only in the daylight!!

do proceed with caution!!

Laurel it all depends how well traveled the person is. In the big picture, driving is Jamaica probably rates in the middle between
very safe and crazy. If you take away minibus and taxi drivers (which drive crazy worldwide), then your typical Jamaican driver is
is well educated about the rules of the road, complies with most (except speed limit and those pesky solid lines in the middle) and
is considerate of others on the road.

If you drive in places like India, Pakistan, Egypt or Philippines you will see that driving is Jamaica is comparatively easy, and you'll
gain respect for Jamaican drivers. I mean in India where I spent last New Years, they have signs on the highway that read "Lane driving is
safe driving". That means they quite haven't mastered driving in one chosen lane yet and the cgovernment is urging them to stick to one
lane, with no apparent results.

Your main threats while driving in Jamaica are potholes, no shoulder, unlit roads, people and animals crossing the road and poor signage.
A first time visitor could sucessfully drive in Jamaica provided then have experience driving in another country with similar threats.

Remo, my question about night driving was only because my sis went to Jamaica and had few problems for driving,this explain my surprise
Whatever, we actually thinking about visiting only West and south because the time is counted and me sis doesn't know very well this part of island... We'll evitably come back to see the other side of the country

too right Magic ... it is all relative ~

If someone is going to make the choice to drive in Jamaica - absolutely - go for it ... we wish them safety and no harm!!

I only chat from what I know for myself. Soon after I had begun to rent a car for us ~ Mr. Big Man let his guard down for one moment in time ... as did I ... and we had just left the airport parking lot and within 30 minutes I was robbed of my wad of cash I arrived with - that put the KY-bosh smashing down on us (and also taught us that I do not move with any more than I can afford to lose) ...

that past experience ... and most recently ~ Mr. BigMan had to rush over to a nasty SMASH UP/MASH UP and pull TeenDawta outta the wreckage - THANKfully ... with only some bumps ~

I know - I know ... these things can happen everyplace ~

we wish for only safe traveling for The French Sisters ~

Hi Marion,

You are going to love Jamaica!!

It is a stunningly beautiful island, the scenery and the people are lovely.

You say you will be in the West? Negril is a great place for catching good reggae concerts.

And a good idea to go to Belmont to see the Peter Tosh Mausoleum. Maybe you can meet his mum! (I did).
Black River is nice, they have a cafe/restaurant on the river there which is a nice place to hang out for a few hours.
And Treasure Beach is great! Very laid back. If you bring any kids' clothes and school supplies you can leave them at reception of Jake's, they will distribute them. Also great for breakfast and dinner (Jack Sprats) there.

I write it in the tripp- book wich I fill up more and more!
When Did you go Marielle? Did u travel alone?
I didn't think about bringing that kind of things for children but it's a very good idea, i'll tell about it.

Hi Marion,

I have been 3 times to Jamaica, first time in 1993. Each time I went with my son, which is a great way to go!!
He was 20 months when he went to Nine Mile, Bob Marley Mausoleum, now he's 18 and loves reggae

Check out the Jamaica Thorn Tree forum on lonelyplanet.com, there's a lot of good info on there.
