Wheel Chair traveler

I work with a woman who would love to see Jamaica. Her husband is in a wheel chair. She would like to see some of the less touristy areas but realizes that might not be the best places for them.

Another coworker from St. Bess (Siloh) has suggested St. Ann would be a good area for them.

Any one have suggestions of where they could stay and go sight seeing.

My thought is beach access might be difficult for them. I don't think she would be able to push his wc in sand.

I have thought about this so many times as my mother aged. I was planning where and what we might be able to pull off. I have seen many wheelcair passengers from cruise ships in Ochii, but Jamaica is not exactly a wheelchair friendly or accessible country.

Maybe Kingston...what do you think?? Sights that you can see from a car. How about getting a wheelchair accessible van, and a driver, and just drive through the country, all of in the hills, etc. Shame about the beach though, because the water is bouyant and the handicap do well in it, it's almost like being whole again, depending on the amount of disability the person had. Disabled people can even &quot;swim&quot; well.

Try contacting Errol Cox of Errol Flynn Tours. He has lots of different vehicles and that personal touch, he may be able to help them.

I know that they go places by car here (with the wife driving). I believe that he can easily transfer himself from the chair into the car. The wheel chair can fold up in the trunk.

I am going toss in my thoughts ...

if he can transfer from chair to car ... I think some easy driving throughought the countryside might be do-able ... and he could experience the beauty offered ... off the main roads / but obviously not deep in.

we have driven often up into the country back of Lucea ... or that cross country drive from Negril to Montego Bay on the way to the airport ... I have often been thrilled with what I can see from the car.

My mother was in a wheel chair at the end of her life .. so I am familiar with the limitations ... I know she would have been thrilled to get to see some of the things I have seen.

now - regarding the beach ...

My Bim has had to make guests in a wheel chair get to have the beach experience as well. There was a young couple that he got to be friends with ... he and Chris (at WB) would get this man into the water ... leave the couple to have their sea/swim time together, and of course, be available if needed ... and when the swim time was over ~ they would get the man back out from the sea.

No issues and with complete dignity ... not for sure how it was done ~ possibly by carrying the man in a smaller plastic yard chair (not a lounger) into the sea ???

It can be done ~ again ... with dignity ...

I sure would like to see him be able to get into the sea too. It's so wonderful.

I so agree!

They are only in their 50's. If it was not for medical issues they would be the off the beaten path type.
