Kingston Hotel help

Hello everyone!

My wife and I will be traveling to Kingston in about 2 weeks and we need help with lodging. We will be staying in Kingston for 7 nights. I know most of the more well know hotels in Kingston cater to business travelers and they can be quite expensive. We are looking for a place, preferably in New Kingston, between $50-80 US dollars a night. The place doesn't have to be new or fancy, but needs to be safe and clean. We are not picky people and don't expect a smaller locally owned hotel in Jamaica to be up to the same homogenized standards as a place in the US.

We usually stay in places with a kitchenette or a shared kitchen while in Jamaica, so if it's on the high side with a kitchenette that would be good too. I've looked through Trip Advisor and other sights and all I seem to find is bu$ine$$ hotel$, or really mixed reviews on some of the more affordable places. Any help or suggestions on where to stay would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Also, if anyone has any advise about getting around via taxi, or where to eat, that would be great too.

I have seen this one. The rates look good and their restaurant sounds good too. The only thing is they get some pretty mixed reviews.

Altamont Court Hotel...family owned and operated....in New Kingston and conveniently across di road from Hot Pot...my choice wen i am in Kingston cause dem check fi u safety in more ways dan one...gateman no tek no excuse....could be di lawd at di gate, him a cawl u room so chek seh u was expekting him...forgive di borderline sacrilege...

The lowest price listed on their website is $128, which is a little too much for us.

u might find cheaper places in Kingston but wat u save in dollas u lose out in iffy clientele etc....some of those hotels/motels r notorious fi one-night stands etc...noise factor n juss general coming an going ....

but good luck wid u search....some oddas deh bout but i would neva recommend dem knowing wat i know of dem behind di scenes rep.... di cheaper ones dat is

I've seen Mikuzi too. It seems to get some pretty mixed reviews, which is too bad considering it looks good and is a great price. Also, I seem to remember hearing about an incident that happened there with a tourist a while back which didn't turn out good.

I am however leaning towards two places. The Liguanea Club or Eden Gardens, but more towards the latter. The Liguanea Club has a great location, but is almost the same price as Eden Gardens which has a kitchenette. If anyone has in feedback on either, I would greatly appreciate it!

I have stayed there (most recently, about 4 or 5 years ago). The iffy reviews are probably well deserved... the property is older and that's reflected in the rooms and furnishings. It wasn't filthy but could have been a little cleaner. I didn't notice much in the way of security, but we had no issues. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant and the food was good. There's also a good restaurant literally across the street, with good food and a nice relaxed atmosphere. It's also centrally located - walking distance to a lot of stuff (i.e. all of New Kingston, Emancipation Park, Devon House, Bob Marley Museum, etc...) and the staff was very friendly.

To be honest, I stayed here because I spent this particular trip revisiting a lot of the places I knew from my youth and I used to hang out at this place (and the place across the street) with my father quite a bit when he was alive. I am familiar with nicer places in Kingston, just not in your listed price range.

Good luck in your search and have a good time, Kingston can be an enjoyable place to visit if you can get past its reputation.

The Liguanea Club offers a room, The Eden gardens offers a suite, with A/c, internet access, pool,laundry facilities, and kitchenette with stove or hotplate, small fridge, and pots and pans.. and security.. I like to have a place to prepare a meal .... there are supermarkets about 10 minute walk ..(if I remember well John R Wong), restaurants, banks gas stn ... local transportation and quiet .I stayed there for 3 months in 2009
Last i heard, Mikizi didnt have security and my experience there is that she was iffy with her arranged bookings ..
just down the road from Mikuzi is Sandhurst or Prestige as it is now called and their rooms go for about US50 and has a/c..ask for one of the newly built rooms ..

You can acutally get a suite at the Liguanea Club, but they charge a lot more for it as I found out. (probably because of the location)
