I was also just about to ask if the contest was over.

Seveen, the new plan sounds lovely. I like having grass in the back but at the rate the grass is growing now, I wouldn't care if I had rocks in the front yard. I think somebody must be sneaking around at night and spraying Miracle Grow on it.

Sod Shortage Hits Northeast Florida
Cold Winter Creates High Demand, Low Supply

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's not hard to spot grass that's dry and dead around town because of an abnormally cold winter.

Conversely, sod is almost impossible to find right now. The demand for sod is high, but the supply is low at businesses around northeast Florida, resulting in a shortage.

Grenade and Doris Wooten made the decision to make their grass a little greener with the help of sod.

&quot;Never seen anything like this. You ever remember?&quot; Grenade asked his wife.

&quot;Not this bad,&quot; Doris said. &quot;This was a hard winter. It just hit on it pretty severely.&quot;

Catherine Ambs, who works in a Lowe's garden center, said sod has been selling quick. The store didn't have any in stock on Tuesday.

&quot;As soon as we pull if off the truck,&quot; Ambs said of how fast the sod has been selling. &quot;We pull a pallet out front and it's already selling.&quot;

A major reason why supply is so low in northeast Florida is that much of the sod the area receives is grown in central and south Florida, which also suffered severe cold snaps last winter. So those areas haven't been able to send as much sod up to northeast Florida as in years past.

Some local businesses said they have already begun to raise prices, while others said they have not yet. They said the best thing homeowners can do is be patient.

As for the Wootens, they said they can't afford to buy any more sod.

&quot;Well, we would probably have to sell our house to have our yard sodded,&quot; Grenade said.

Here's some advice for taking care of sod:

Experts say that about a week before getting sod, be sure to get rid of all of the weeds in the yard. Once it's put in, water it every day for two weeks, and after that, water it about every other day. There are water restriction exceptions for new sod.
