Friends were looking for somewhere cheap to stay in Ocho Rios and I recommended Crane Ridge. Now they read some review on Trip Advisor and are scared to stay there.
Too many people at his house in Gayle, my strict warden of a mother in Tower Isle.
We ran the joint like nobodies business for quite a while - the place was practically our permanent address.
I love the location - yes, even tho it's up on a hill, I liked being away from the noise and constant bustle of the main.
Over time tho, more and more, the service deteriorated.
Kitchen/restaurant service – horrendous.
Rooms weren’t as clean as they once were.
The property itself, the buildings, weren’t being maintained well.
Hot tub, rarely in continuous working order.
More and more it became less of a hotel and more of a condo/timeshare with people buying up the apartments. We can to know of, well – let’s just say, some rather unsavory business people who took up residence there.
Let's not even mention the murder of the young woman from Montego Bay. Hotel would never let out which room she was killed in.

That did it for me.

Geez! I never heard about the murder. I can not recall what year I was there. but it was before 911. It was in late July. There were lots of retearning Jamaicans there. The place was clean and in good repair. The staff were nice and helpful.
Yes – the murder sealed the deal for us. We went back only one time after that. At that time, they had changed over from actual keys for the room doors to cards.
A young woman, originally from Montego Bay. Her father was/is a well known preacher in Mobay. Working in Kingston as an accountant, sent to Ochie on an assignment for Dolphin Cove. The company had her stay at Crane Ridge.
A man from her father’s church, was said to be common knowledge that he was a bit mentally teetering and was obsessed with her.
He broke into her room and killed her.
Fortunately, he was caught after a few days. He was tried and convicted.
I’ve stayed at 3 other places (Pegasus, Guesthouse in Porty where I knew the owner and a place in Negril) where murders occurred but this one was just literally and figuratively, too close to home for me.
Anything can happen at ANY hotel at ANY country in the world – hell, look at the Craigslist killer in Boston! I mean – the Copley Marriot is nice - one of THE most well known places in town.
So I’m not saying they shouldn’t go there because of that past, too gruesome for me, history.
Depending on what they’re looking for tho, the service is not full steam – or even half steam – like it used to be.
Then again, depends on your friends.
Some people just want a pillow to lay their head, the beach and a red stripe and they’re fine.
