I am curious (nosy) who this works. How much did it cost. How much deposit is required, etc.

Re: Any one ever rented a cell phone
there are so many different way to do this, the deposit amounts, charges, etc are inconsistent - it really depends on each rental company. the last time i rented one, was from Rent-A-Cell Negril. This is a kind of "mom-n-pop" small operation where no deposit is required and they work pretty much on the honor system. It was 30.00 for the week, no deposit required, I set it up with an e-mail to the USA part of the operation, & they notified the other half in Negril - he met me at a specified spot and delivered the phone in person. When i was ready to leave I just called him and set up a meeting place to return it to him. No deposit required, I just added minutes as I wanted to and returned the phone at the end of the week. super easy and worked great -
these days there are loads more phone-rental services. also some transportation services that offer free use of cell phone for the week when you book with them. some hotels also offer free cells for guest use.

Re: Any one ever rented a cell phone
I don't see the point of renting a phone unless it's a one-off thing and you never plan to rent it again. If you plan to do it more than once, it's more economical to buy a cheap phone and a sim card. And the best thing is that you can use it anywhere in the world.

I agree, that is the way to go. Buy a local sim card - and have a sim-lock-free phone. But don't you need a triple or quad band phone for that? I remember checking it out, cos they use different band-widths - or whatever - in Europe and the Americas (not sure what they use in Asia).
Anyway, I had one, with mp3 and camera, and it "disappeared" in Cuba.....during a moment's inattention. (Not a wonder really, the tempation....
).
