Hello to everyone in the forums. I'm pleased to be a new member here.

My name is Chris and I am a television producer in New York City. I am currently working on a new series for a major cable network, called "Contact."

The show will take a well-known American psychic and ghost investigator around the world so he can learn how other cultures and religions view the idea of ghosts and the afterlife, and what ceremonies they may perform in order to attempt to connect with spirits.

It is not a "ghost-hunting" show. It is more about learning the history and culture of different countries, meeting people who may have had experiences with ghosts, and traveling to places not often seen on television.

I am writing to as many people as I can in hopes of finding help with our project. We are looking for people who know the subject matter well, who can speak to the history of Jamaica, and who may also be in touch with Jamaicans themselves who have had personal experiences they are willing to share.

Thanks very much for any help you may be able to provide. We're excited to explore the wonderful culture of Jamaica through the prism of a spiritual connection.

In Jamaica we don't have ghosts. We have Duppy [doh-pee] who roam the countryside and torment people at night time. They are quite prevalent and you will have plenty of material to shoot on location.

To get your research started I strongly recommend you read this book:
The Duppy - Anthony C. Winkler

You can read the few pages of that book with the above link.
That makes that a great resource is that the book was written by a duppy in first person so that
the account of what happens to a Jamaican Duppy from start to finish is very accurate (and funny at the same time).

Another good source is the local newspapers, which often report on duppy sightings, especially the Roving With Lalah column in the Jamaica Gleaner, and the Star. Although you will find duppy articles in the Observer as well.

Mentally unbalanced people is abound in Jamaica.
The culture is very much into mythical beliefs.

One of the remnants of slavery And the tools used to perpetuate it Even after officially abolished.

People who believe in myths are easily manipulated.

And the manipulation continues.

I find the topic quite interesting. Maybe for most that laugh at the idea of ghost or the paranormal need to look at it as a science. There are to many paranormal reports by sane, level headed people for there not to be something to this. There has to be an explanation.
If one believes in life after death than why would it not be posible for elements of energy to exist after death since all life consist of energy which does not stop. After you die the energy that does exist must go somewhere. Einstein's theory of relativity agrees that matter is a structure of space and that energy never stops and therefore we must come to a conclusion that there is life after death. That said, why would it not be possible for some us at a point in time to be able to witness this transformation from one side to the other?

Question: Why is it that people are willing to believe in some type of God that we have absolutely no proof exist, but scoff at the idea of ghost or duppies etc?
There are more reports of sane people seeing the paranormal than there are of sane people seeing God.

Hmmm, just food for thought.

what was the question bout duppy again? anyway mi sister did swear seh she see a duppy in her bedroom when we were kids....priest did come and bless the house, she never mention seeing the duppy again.

(me never really have much to say, me did just waan come hail up mi possible cousin )

Thank you for all of your thoughts - I appreciate you all taking the time to offer some help. And it's nice to know that I may already have family in Jamaica!

Magix - thank you very much for the links and info. Since my first post I've been reading non-stop about history, tragic events, duppies, Obeah, Myal, etc, etc, etc. It is a huge task to try and wrap my arms around an entire culture to where we can do it justice while filming. I have a huge amount of respect for Jamaican people and feel a big responsibility to put forth a solid effort with this project.

I know that there are many who do not believe in the afterlife, or the existence of spirits or duppies. And Lonrwolf, you make an excellent point. I have met hundreds on both sides of the skeptical/believer argument.. and to me what is behind the opinions of both sides is what is interesting.

I am not here, nor will this show be meant to &quot;convince&quot; people about ghosts. It is meant to learn all sides - the good, the bad, and the ugly. The believers and the skeptics. The accepted and the taboo. It is my chance to tell stories rarely heard to MANY people.. so it is my job to try and find the stories.

I will keep reading and learning and digging. I will be back here often to let you know how things are going - I am scheduling my visit to Jamaica for early February.
