really haffi seh mi looking fawud to it now...will be tekking nuff up close pictures..going camera hunting in a few...want a new canon wid some super zoom..dis is not an Iphone experience...

sometimes i HATE jamaica

for such a small country (less than 3,000,000) population there are a lot of problems

right now - i am not planning any return trips

i kissed jamaica goodbye during my dec/jan trip

the entire time i was in negril - i felt unsafe

not like imminient danger - more like the danger that creeps up unexpectedly - like - BOO

i lay in bed one night and heard the woman whose pocketbook was stolen - right outside my window

another night i hear a violent argument

and begin to wonder - what could the &quot;security&quot; do in the event of an emergency - they don't appear armed to me

and the &quot;soon come&quot; police don't give a feeling of protection

recent events at RUI make me feel like soon gunmen will attack the resorts - there is a bounty of money, jewelry, cell phones to be had - juxtaposed against poverty, crime and wanton disregard for human life

i know there are law abiding citizens in jamaica but as the saying goes - a few bad apples can ruin the whole bunch

and yes - anything can happen anywhere - but in jamaica the level of protection and subsequent consequences are nil to none

i have been visiting the island since 1972 - and lived through the villa invasions that happened in the '80's and unfortunately i feel that the climate is ripe for the return of tourist terrorism

so for the near future - i will be spending my holiday dollars somewhere else

have to admit dat mi last trip i was uneasy in di hotel...coulden put mi finga on it...juss dat soooo many people r on the property for all the things they rent it out for....

i actually put a chair under mi lock and put a trash can by the connecting door...

first time ever

also feel some unease as a St Elizabeth skintone yaadie walking bout di place..so few of us out an about n is like dem stamp u as a visitor....neva thought i would mek dis statement but is di troot...Jah know...

but den i do love Kingston and alllll its pawts....still trying to touch bases all ovah regardless, even wen some places mek mi breathe hard

but i am a tourist

and i've decided to tour new places

cheaper, more comfortable and safer

frankly , travelling has lost its taste for me...the hassle is too much...glad i did a lot of it all along...now it not worth the destination..fi real...

so many variables to mek a trip lose its luster...the first of wich is the drama at the airports...is all fine an good to fly first class n be comfortable on the plane,. but u have to get to it through toooo much drama

an the hotels mite be 5 star but dem is as good as the guest who stayed before and how dem behaved in the room...too many germs not being killed by cleaning..frightening report on the fact that ur dishwasher is not all dat clean despite the hotwater u use in it...so u can image how hotels can be festering cesspools of mutating germs....eekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

i am getting to be a homebody...i do plan however, to do a train trip...always want to and trying hard to memba to dweet in the good weather time...

I'm sure we've discussed this before when you first wrote this note, but when my friends and colleagues mention &quot;feeling safe&quot; or &quot;feeling unsafe&quot;, this always gets me thinking.

Our gut feelings about security, for example come from personal experience, hearing other's stories, or in the absence of facts, our brains must fill in the blanks with what we think should be there based on limited information.
A false sense of security is nice in a way, but in reality it allows us to let our guard down, and that's when bad things happen to us.
A false sense of danger is also a negative, because it causes stress, and we can't think clearly under stress, as our spare mental capacity is used up by the stress.
Best attitude is to heave a healthy dose of suspicion, sometimes referred to as street smarts, where you always watch your back, whether the place is perceived as safe or dangerous.

In my line of work, me and my co-workers end up spending time in foreign cities around the world. It's impossible to know the good and bad neighbourhoods in every city, and there are over a 100 destinations, so chances are you are only in a place once in a while. It's very interesting what cities the people consider as &quot;safe&quot; and what cities are considered as &quot;dangerous&quot;.
A lot of the African, Asian and South American destinations are ranked as un-safe, and the European and Australian/ NZ destinations marked as safe.

To date, I've never heard of any incidents taking place at the so called &quot;unsafe destinations&quot;. Why? people have their guard up.

Meantime, I have a crew have her purse snatched in Nice (France), had a pilot broken into his room in Melbourne (Australia), and we recently had a crew attacked by a gang in Auckland (New Zealand) where the captain sustained serious injuries trying to defend his crew. All of these perceived as &quot;safe&quot; destinations. And when it's safe, you let your guard down, and that's when things happen.

When it comes to Jamaica, in most cases your approach will determine if you fall victim or not.
Did the lady whose pocketbook was stolen take appropriate measures to safeguard her pocketbook? If she did not, could the same thing happen anywhere else? Most likely.

So it's best to have a healthy dose of suspicion and situational awareness when flexing in JA. The same level of precaution might also come in handy in any other country.
