Vannie, my My great Grandfather was Ojibwa. My Mother could have been registered Ojibwa had there been a birth record for her mother. My artist grandmother was from the US/Canada, take your pick. Nobody knows for sure as she &amp; my Grandfather were tragically killed in an car wreck in 1941 leaving my mother an orphan and no records to speak of..but her few known relatives/uncles and cousins are registered.

My Father's roots go from France to Nova Scotia in the 1600's, and then after becoming a political prisoner a great great great (so many greats I can't count em yet) granddaddy and a few other guys petitioned the US government to start their own town. I have only briefly scanned the documents since I just got them and have been so busy but I am dying to dig my teeth in. My mother and an Aunt and Uncle pooled their resources and time and came up with the history. It is a project I am saving for winter, to put it all together and get it to my nieces &amp; nephews and so on. Interesting stuff, I am from a long line or rebels

The blonde hair comes from my Grandfather on my Mom's side He immigrated to the US in 1917 at 18 years old. I have only recently been in possession of loads of images of him, and his other family, some who were in Finland, and even have some names and I am anxious to look all of that stuff up now too.

Basically, I am a blonde french woman who's ancestors had some teepee creepin going on with a dab of SwedeFinn .Estonian

Tulip, Lake Superior is 10 minutes away to the beach and approx 2 miles as the crow flies. This is my official back yard...





The Upper Peninsula is pretty much the same weather as I have here, and most think it is not fit for man nor beast . That said...

It is a lot easier to bundle up in warmer clothes or throw another log on the fire than it is to try to stay cool in the heat. The views are spectacular...there is privacy as multiple acres are common for a homestead.

Summer is short, Spring is non existent unless you want to call the months from March through May mostly a living hell. We go from Winter to Summer in a flash. Winter can start in September/October and last well into April/May. Fall is the BEST time of year, no humidity and bug free and sometimes we get a long Fall seasons. You don't have to be crazy to live here but it helps, they say.

UP houses lower priced

I have seen many a $20,000. house (usually in town, single family) for sale but even more for around $40,000.-70,00 with a few acres and seem OK. Some are actually nice, but with a little outdated paint jobs or wallpaper and such. I could sell out (I have a buyer) and be out of here so fast I wouldn't know what hit me, but I have to let the dust settle before I decide whether to make a move or not. A scooter trip to the UP is in order so that I might drive around and look for places &amp; talk to people. That is how I found this place! It never made the real estate or paper, word of mouth, leave phone number etc... saves time and $$$.

Vannie, I have not been around so I did not know you are having health problem with breathing. Change of climate? Are you moving? Update, please..

Laurel, there are Pow Wow's down by you. The season began down your way early Spring. I found this page you can start here and if you want I will help you find one you can get to.

good luck with ur ancestry search..i have tried but it is hard it seems...not knowing a lot hinders me

have developed some serious allergies..going outside leaves me itching, wheezing, seeping from eyes etc...there is some serious pollen counts up here n an increase in allergic reaction across the board

am finally getting relief by taking steroids

going to Ja an plan to see if the change will alleviate the symptons ...u know how we island people sweat by sea breeze an mineral bath fi fix all our ailments..

at this rate, between the cold of the winter and the pollen count of the other seasons, i mite have to move somewhere totally different..might be time to find that island after all

I hope your trip helps your allergies. I have not experienced them but have a friend that suffers and I have seen her pretty miserable. Safe travels!

I totally agree with that. It's easier to warm up than cool off.

Vanns - I have always had issues with allergies and whatnot ... but in the past 10 or so years - wicked asthma has surfaced as well. UGH!! but - time spent in Jamaica has always somewhat healed me. later this summer / early this fall I may have an opportunity for a longer stay ... longer term healing.

Tulip, I don't love that the bathroom is next to the kitchen, but the house is a good example of what is out there. I will prolly take a drive over that way next week or so.

We have a little rain falling this morning though after the deluge on Friday night we sure don't need it. I had knee deep water in my driveway that has not gone all the way down yet!

Love catching with everyone here, from the PowWows to tempting, beautiful and affordable (!) homesteads far from it all, this is has been a fun post to read.

Summer so far has been very different and at times difficult for me. First summer without my mother, but I'm actually happy to be a support to my Dad.

My kids are home from school and that's been great.

I'm aching to go to Jamaica now, but working hard here to ensure we can finish things re: the house in Jamaica. I'll be there in less than a year's time for my mom's memorial (and I'll be responsible for planning that).

I'm spending a lot of time this summer building up my part-time freelancing business (while I work full-time) so that when I'm ready to split my time between Jamaica and Canada, I'll have a means of earning an income while in Jamaica.

That's my update
