Tourism officials have expressed concern about the current rate of beach erosion in Negril, Westmoreland.
The officials, led by hotelier Lee Issa, says the popular location which has been named one of the ten "Best Beaches in the World" could lose its most important natural resource within 10 years, if urgent action is not taken to cauterize the erosion.
Mr Issa says if the attrition is allowed to continue, it could be the end of the industry.
While appealing for action, Mr Issa says the Negril shoreline has been retreating at a rate of 1-2 metres per year, a trend captured in a 2008 report from coastal environmental company, Smith Warner International Limited.
With the situation worsening, Smith Warner recommended immediate restorative work, which would cost between US$19.4 million dollars and US$25.5 million respectively.
Negril contributed approximately 25 per cent or US$500 million of the US$2 billion gross earnings that the country boasted last year.
