Merritone reunion turns 21
Monday, September 19, 2011
TWENTY-ONE years ago after returning from a friend's funeral Winston Blake was in a pensive mood. After expressing how tired he was of "seeing his friends when they couldn't see him" he expressed the desire to have a celebration where he could relax with friends under happier circumstances — the result — the Merritone Family Reunion now a staple on the entertainment calendar.
Last Thursday evening saw the Blake brothers launching the 21st renewal of the annual Merritone Family Reunion set to take place on the weekend of October 12 - 17 at the Sunset Beach Resort.
Guest speaker at the launch, director of the music museum at the Institute of Jamaica Herbie Miller, lauded Merritone Music as one of the sound systems that has "used music to break down social barriers and class -- whether deliberately or not".
"They introduced a style of music to the massive who supported the heavyweight downtown," he shared. "Merritone Music opened the door for music not considered soul or pop," Miller told those who turned out at Waterfalls for the launch.
Music lovers, particularly Merritone Music aficionados have been promised a feast of music, food and non-stop enjoyment at the event.
The Merritone Reunion kicks off on Wednesday, October 12, with Merritone Meet and Greet at Chasers Cafe, Kingston, while on Thursday, October 13, the Waterfalls, Kinston will be the venue for Merritone's Turn Table Thursday.
The ever-popular Merritone All-Inclusive Weekend will be hosted at Sunset Beach Resorts October 14 - 17, with the curtain raiser Merritone Las' Lik on The Deck, October 17.
Merritone Music all began when Val Blake, father of the current heirs to the Merritone dynasty -- Trevor, Winston, Tyrone and Monte -- started Merritone Disco in 1950, he was pioneering a sound built to last. It now has the distinction of being the last sound system from that era, still alive.
The sound has evolved benefiting from the experience of playing with some of the greatest names in early music, people like Sir Coxsone Down Beat, Tom the Great Sebastian, V Rocket, Sky Rocket, Duke Reid The Trojan, Lord Koos and King Edwards. Merritone Music in fact superseded the famous Sir Coxsone Downbeat by two full years..
From its beginnings in Morant Bay, St Thomas, Merritone Music has in six decades touched music lovers from Torrington Bridge to Wembley Club, and its legendary Turntable Club, and also across borders -- the Caribbean, North America and Europe.
