OCHO RIOS, St Ann – The St Ann Health Department has served closure notices on 10 food establishments in the parish, in an effort to tackle a serious rat infestation problem.

The towns of Ocho Rios, St Ann’s Bay, Brown’s Town and Claremont have been reported to be infested by rodents of all sizes.

The department said it would pursue a multi-agency approach involving all relevant stakeholders including the National Solid Waste Management Authority, (NSWMA) National Works Agency, Urban Development Corporation and the St Ann Parish Council and the business community.

To remedy the situation the department said it would work with the NSWMA for more frequent collection of waste, to intensify the inspection of business establishments and an embark on an aggressive health education programme.

A breakdown in garbage collection as well as its improper disposal and storage has been blamed for the rodent infestation problem.

Ew. I'm sure it is a huge problem and especially now for the named business owners. It is good for the public that the Health Dept. is doing something. I still could hurl.

Jamaica is infested in many a way...even a renowned high school had to close its doors fi a week tru di rat dem a tek ovah...we have noooo money for local services...none....dat is y peeps like moi mek noise ovah private airfield for non arriving private jets....Leptospirosis cases been springing up in Jamaica fi di lass five years but people went on as if it was only in the poor areas...well uptown naybahoods r haven to rats so it is safe to say all dem fast food places etc having a rat problem too....now we starting a rat patrol to tackle the infestation in Kingston....

Committee meets to determine how to rid City of rats
















Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has mandated an inter-ministerial committee, to implement a national programme to address public health and safety concerns.

The committee, which had its first meeting on Monday April 23 at Jamaica House has decided on the need for a major public education programme and collaboration of efforts involving various agencies and departments.

It also agreed to make the thrust part of a broader “Clean up Jamaica” campaign.

This comes a week after a public health report confirmed that there is a major rat problem in Kingston and St. Andrew.

Last week the KSAC revealed the results of a survey which showed that 87 percent of 120 communities assessed had rodent infestation.

The survey indicated that 50 percent had a very heavy infestation of rats.

15 to 49 percent had a heavy infestation and 12 to 15 percent classified as moderate.

The Waltham Park and Hagley Park Road areas showed a very high level of rodent infestation.

It's estimated that it will cost 200 million dollars to conduct a rodent eradication programme in the Corporate Area.

The committee which comprises the Office of the Prime Minister, Ministries of Agriculture, Health, Local Government, Education, Industry and the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation is to meet again this week to finalise its programme of action.
