The problem with the UK is the departure tax that the government imposes on all the tickets. It's the highest in the world.
So the fares are very high partly because of the taxes.

As an airline employee, I pay a very small fee for flights, but still have to pay all the taxes. It's cheaper for me to fly from LA to the middle east than from London to the Middle east when LA is 16 hour away and London is 7.
