I saw it too! That little boy...forget his name but it starts with an A...that boy was so brilliant but it was like he got nonchalant and did not care about his future in the end after his dad died...

I came away with a greater understanding of the needs of these children. There is so much passion that lies within them, but they need something or someone to expose them. Many of the young men are in dire need of male mentorship. The girls are fearless, the boys, afraid. One of the male students, a 16 year old from Grants Pen asked me when I would be able to get him a mentor. He asked if I could get someone next week. Listen closely, take the time, and you too can hear their calling. They are children who can be great citizens of the world if given the right tools. How can a child succeed if she isn't given the opportunity? It can't stop on Friday. This project led to so much insight, but the work must be done.

Two of the boys decided not to participate in the project out of fear. They mentioned that the neighborhood in which they lived was not a place to take candid photos. Both boys remained with us until the end of the workshop and one said he would participate in the larger project next year. The children were taken out to the neighboring lane (which we were told was a place to fear) and began shooting images that captivated them. Martei reinforced the lessons about light, subject, composition, and angle to the children as they began to roam and shoot. Locals watched keenly, some asking what they were doing. Many of the children said no one in their neighborhood owned a camera and they hoped that they could be skilled enough to make some money off of their photography when the project was completed. One young man took some shots that amazed me. He was quite timid at first but by 12pm he was setting up shots and teaching others the functions of the camera.

So the first day was a great success. This is a learning experience for everyone involved. The adults working at the St. Andrew Parish Church Care center were fully engaged in the workshop. Martei Korley came well prepared to share his work and his knowledge with the participants. Some even brought their own cameras and took notes (the adults). We had a local volunteer who aimed to learn more about the art of photography. She shared her desire to teach. More children came than we planned for. We invited 8, and 11 showed up. They started coming long before the start of the workshop. We had more boys than girls, but the boys came in quite timid, sitting in the back of the classroom and afraid to speak. The girls sat right up front and asked questions. They learned how to use natural light to their benefit, they learned a great deal about composition, and they also were able to utilize some of the functions of the camera when Martei took them outside to shoot. Some nice shots...</span>

Much respect for those who have donated cameras- they just got put to work:
