I've raised this question in the background with a few friends who travel to Jamaica often. I recently took a young man with me who is very very political and economically oriented who has also traveled there quite a bit. He agreed with me 100% when I talked to him about this.
My sticking point is ......where is your heart REALLY, and ultimately, where does your money go?
I personally (and I am speaking for Marilyn here), would PREFER that the money I spend in Jamaica stays in Jamaican hands as much as possible.
I don't begrudge any business person a right to go to Jamaica and live out a fantasy while making money, it's just that I feel when you go to people's country (especially when you open your eyes and look around you), why not enhance/help/ support those self-same people???
Now there are several properties, in Negril for instance, that are American owned, American-Chinese owned, Spanish, Canadian, Italian...so be it....but for me, I tend to support Jamaican owned and operated establishments.
Quite often it may not be the BEST DEAL, or the CHEAPEST place to stay (did you ever consider that this AMerican owned property had the airline hook up (something small boutique hotels can't do by in large), and can naturally offer you this super super deal, at the expense of others I might add.
To me it comes down to being a traveler, or being a socially conscious traveler. I ESPECIALLY challenge my African American friends to think about this when you throw your dollars on the counter. There is DOUBLE economics here...we need to support our own (how long have you been hearing that?), as well as leave a few bucks in Jamaican hands.
I also challenge you to look into the "give back to the community" record of the places you stay. That's important to me too (Bravo Travelers (though I don't know who owns the place, maybe Monk can tell me).
I really believe that the tourist who frequent this board are not the typical ones. You are the repeaters/obsessors, and Jamaica is more than a travel destination for you (I hope).
I floated this theory to some people on my last flight in, and I got hhmmmmmmmmmm never thought about it or looked at it that way, but you have a great point.
If you don't talk about it....then people will continue to leave the bulk of their money with CoCo La Palm (aka Co CO La Prison), and walk around the fence everyday to For REal to eat and drink cheaper and soak up some real culture (so why not spend a few buck more and just STAY THERE?????)
I think it is time that we stop being just Travelers, and become socially conscious Travelers.
Ok mi done til yall weigh in.
