Thankfully mi nuh wuk fe de tourist board and nuh haffe worry dat my opinions gonna influence anybaddys decision weda to go Jamaica or not... they have real professional people who do that... I don;t kid myself that what I say here will do anything to alter anybody's preconceived notions - but I dam sure will share it whenever and where i get a chance to do so.

Jazz, I don't know Sprat personally, but I feel, from reading her many posts on a next board, that she loves Jamaica &amp; the people &amp; has nuff respect for both. Why do you think all the farriners in Jamaicaholics keep going back a Yaad? She was just relating her experience as she saw it. The more times folks come to Jamaica, the more they see &amp; know....everything is not always pretty, even though the island itself is breathtaking, as you all know. Jamaica, like the rest of the world, has it's problems.

The fact that a farriner in Jamaica took a nosedive, made some bad choices and fell into bad company &amp; ended up inna crackhouse being a hooker to support herself really has no reflection on the whole of Jamaica. Those kind of events can happen anywhere in the world.

I have seen many boardies criticize &amp; badmouth the US and Canada to the max on this board &amp; no one seems to take offense to those comments (the N. Americans)...(probably cause most of us agree with them)....I have lived here now nearly 5 years &amp; I have never experienced any of the events that she wrote about, but then, I spend very little time in Negril, for some of those reasons.

Nowhere in the world is perfect.

Jumping in to this one. I am not certain why. I know my comments will not be appreciated. But, I feel strongly enough about this to come in anyway.

There is a difference between pride and unmitigated arrogance. Over the many years I have hung out here, it is a constant that many Jamaicans are unable to accept what they assume is any sort of criticism about Jamaica from non-Jamaicans.

If you read the board thoroughly, it is noted that Jamaicans themselves are very hard on their county. It seems, however, when a non-Jamaican makes any statement that is not completely positive about the island, it is intolerable.

Having been born and raised in Jamaica does not mean that &quot;your Jamaica&quot; is still reality. I grew up in the US when things were simpler, people were kinder, and life was much easier.

Am I naive enough to think that has not changed? No, certainly not. Jamaica is not immune to the changes that have occurred in this world.

I read Sprat's story when it was first posted and, after reading all these comments, I reread. I do not see s single anti-Jamaican comment throughout the whole post.

From my experience, much of what Sprat has said is true. Does that mean Jamaica and Jamaicans are low life, dirty scoundrels? Of course not.

I actually was living in Negril when &quot;Goldie&quot; first arrived. I did not know her. However, in 1997, there was no doubt she was considered a prostitute and poacher by the Jamaicans living there. I cannot state that was true, however, I did see her in &quot;action&quot; at various sites in town.

Folks, please understand there are many Jamaicans who are living a survival life. This is a fact. You can deny it all you like, but it is the truth.

It is also the truth this is not what Jamaica is all about. But, it is a true slice.

After reading and re-reading Sprat's tale, I do not see anything that is judging or anti-Jamaica. There is nothing in that story saying &quot;Goldie&quot; was destroyed by Jamaica. It is nothing more a tale of what Sprat observed.

As someone stated, why would people like Sprat go back over and over if they felt the island was some type of cess pool.

Jamaica is beautiful, wonderful and ..... has problems.

Please try and accept that those of us who are NOT born Jamaican would not be expending this energy if we did not love your land of wood and water.

i'm happy for every dollar spent in jamaica - but the projection of jamaican tourism to the world is not on me - nor what i do when i am there - yes - it is sold as paradise, even paradise PLUS - by sandals, breezes, hedo - folks dancing and singing in the &quot;rain&quot; drinking red stripe, appleton, negril - even naked with thongs and sarongs hanging out saying &quot;ya mon&quot; - this is all sold marketed - and floated upon the world market by jamaicans

rejecting tourists that buy into that image - and have had it reinforced by jamaicans during their tours, hotel stays, beach visits - ISN'T ON THE TOURIST - especially when you are far away and aren't there to fight the battle - except to bumba on folks that do go there and spend time there and have the imagine reinforced - but haven't met you 'cause you imigrated to usa, canada or where ever you escaped to

i'm sure this &quot;discussion&quot; has helped open the eyes of some future visitors - i see the viewing count rise and rise ON THIS THREAD and the tourist dollars heading toward cancun

but i don't think your cousins are going to have shoes . . . food, clothes - but you can bring them to your house when all else fails -

OK mi nah go tek de time to respond to each an every poas cause mi did say mi done - however I felt compelled to add a few final thoughts...

First of all - NOWHERE u si mi say dat Jamaica nuh have problems or that it is is perfect or that some of what she describe inna har story nuh exist - my initial objections if oonu tek de time fe read de sitten was de sweeping generalizations bout de life of hardship and deprivation faced by the locals which is their reality cause dem live inna wan 3rd world country... I also was offended by what I perceived as condescension by her referring to the &quot;SO CALLED PARADISE&quot;.

Mi nat even gwine badda respond to de wan dem who come in yah an ah gwaan like dem drink mad puss [censored] - an start mek dis about Jamaica marketing their tourism to the world... totally irrelevant to the conversation that was taking place.... so moving right along...

It warms mi heart to si dat the tourist community is alive and well and is practicing the code of solidarity right here on this board... so why are you guys so offended when Jamaicans do it? Why mi nuh supposed fe say sitten if I have a chance to correct a skewed perception? oonu love talk bout people chat bout US an dis an dat - well mi live an pay taxes here so mi entitled to praise, cuss, tear out mi batty WADDEVVER Mi feel fe do... I ain;t here as a touriss u si mi - furthermore mi nuh go round de place making generalizations about life in the US or the people weh live yah - cause even after 16 years of living here I know enough to know there are still many things about the culture and people that I still don;t understand and probably never will.

I am happy for every visitor that goes to Jamaica and has a positive experience... it seems I am supposed to be grateful for the love bestowed upon Jamaica by these people... Love is a choice u si mi - and I am sure there is something reciprocal about the experience or else there would be a lot less of it going around... and as far as the cousin comment - Not my cousins dear - distribute yuh generosity elsewhere.

Sprat I don't know who told you that my intention was to prevent you from littering the internet with your love of Jamaican, or your stories, or any odda fawt yu choose fi, anything else you care to share. I also could cNOT care less about your decision to do so.
