Sooooooo too bad to hear this about Ochi. The place was still quite nice last time I was there, but there was an air of deterioration about it already. But the back-passing among the ppl who should share collective responsibility for its welfare is pretty disgusting. What a shame they don't take more pride in their community!

Ochi is just dead...no crowd a peeps bout di place except fi yaadies...n even den di place still have a dead vibe....tings hard an all but still..one ship was in the pier n hardly anybody came off..matter of fact very few came off...as to the pestering, it is hard to pester wen dere is nobody to pester..

frankly tourism as it use to be in Ja is dead an gone...if u not use to how it was, u would tink u getting a good ting..even the food no have that taste whe u know dem put dem foot eena di cooking...know wat i mean...

the stores have the said fare...the everlasting offer to tighten up u locs n if not locs den to braid...even the crafts market is a big yawn...said fare...all made in China

there is call from some for the bizniz of tourism to be revised, as it stands in Jamaica...the old formula is passe...it is ironic that many of the issues i have taken a stand about, n wich i have mentioned even here in this report , r now being brought up by the press etc in Jamaica

A Gleaner story of September 16 dealt with CNN's characterisation of Dunn's River Falls as one of the world's 12 worst tourist traps, according to an August 22 article. The online comments feature numerous objections to the article, with many disagreeing both with the places included and those omitted.

What, really, is a tourist trap? A place that attracts tourists, certainly, so there are inevitably crowds. There's generally a perception that the visitor does not get value for money. A tourist trap is inauthentic - often a genuinely magical place ruined by ugly buildings, noise, litter and tackiness.

Sometimes tourist traps are purpose-built - like Disney World. Sometimes they are gorgeous natural places that have been spoiled - like Dunn's River. Or Niagara Falls. Yet, tourists come in their multitudes to such places and few complain.

<span style="font-weight: bold">If you are over a certain age, you may remember a Dunn's River where no shoes were needed to climb the falls because there was no algae on the rocks, where there were few structures south of the road, where there was no need for an ugly breakwater in the sea, where no one was induced to scream 'Hot, hot, hot' as a vital part of the experience, and where humanity did not overwhelm every inch of the site</span>.

Dunn's River today is without doubt a highly successful tourist trap. Isn't that what we want, though, when we talk about tourist attractions?

i've always found her a solid environmentalist, tho.

the lament she has for drf is founded, i guess, but really, i dont think dunn's river falls was ever billed as an eco attraction, so of course, no one would be safeguarding it from an environmental point of view.

the hot hot hot piece has me intrigued.

Judy Hall has a good book out on the meaning of stones and what they're good for, but you can no doubt find it on google too...

I'm really into that stuff too, have a box full of it! Mexico is da bomb for it! And of course in the Far East - India, Nepal etc.

First, last and only time I went to Dunns was 1991. Except for the hot hot hot that's exactly how I remember it. No human chain requirement, either, the barefoot climb was not difficult.
