The winter was harsh and long. Getting up for work had become a grind, and the school semester had taken its toll. After reading what seemed like a million psychology journals, writing papers, and final exams, there were only two weeks before the next semester. I needed a break to relax my mind, and I wasn't the only one. We settled on a visit to Chicago, and left out early on a Wednesday morning on Amtrak from Dearborn, Michigan, for the 4-hour ride.
It was my first time on Amtrak, and it was alright. Fares were much cheaper than on Canada's VIA for a Toronto to Windsor trip, about the same distance from Dearborn to Chicago. However, the service on VIA was much better. Our car was relatively empty, and but for the incessant chatter of four women in front of us, the ride was uneventful. We pulled into Union Station shortly after noon CT, and hopped into a taxi for the short ride to the Hilton Chicago (more money for "celebrat" Paris to spend!).
The traffic was frightening, but more on that later. After a couple hours, it was time to head out on the road, at which point we found out why Chicago is called the windy city. Not only was it windy, but to our chagrin, after the beautiful weather the week before, it was cold! That was the last thing I needed, but brave troopers we were, and with camera in tow, it was down to Millennium Park.
