Sun Studios opened in 1952...from then until sometime in the mid-sixties, this was the microphone used for the lead vocals ....if you've ever heard the original versions of Blue Suede Shoes, Great Balls of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues, Bear Cat, I Walk the Line, Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On, That's Alright Mama (Elvis' version), etc, they were all recorded with this piece of equipment....
This was easily one of the coolest places I've ever been......
I am so much feeling the love here ~~~ if there was ANY time to have budged in - THIS would have been the time.
I am so much a fan of Memphis & all of the Music Legends you are chatting of ... of course - I do not have all the knowledge of the history and such - but I have only seen thru TV history, movies, yada yada - this is exceptional to be able to share the experience thru cyber space ... just think what a thrill it would have been to be able to feel the love and the vibe with first hand taking this tour with you & the others.
I only got to walk past on the sidewalk the other side of the street of Sun Studio my one time in Memphis ~
nancee, Laurel...you both got the right idea...the historical significance of the place is unmistakable...in fact, the building itself was designated a National Historic Landmark a couple of years ago, and as such, will remain there as long as it stands....but equally important is the influential significance of the Studio and the musicians who worked there....if there had been no Sun, the Beatles don't exist....Led Zeppelin doesn't exist....the Rolling Stones don't exist....they, and many others, owe a great debt to the pioneers....
and one final note....it's not just a museum....it's still an active recording studio...when the tourists clear out, the musicians move in...the famous and the not so famous .... just off the top of my head, I know that the Irish rock band, U2, recorded a couple of tracks for their 1988 album Rattle & Hum in that very room
Laurel, you should have crossed the street
and sorry for any misunderstanding ... it was just me and Pooh there that day....you know how sometimes we get the "beach gravity" in Negril? well, I saw a similar phenomenon affect some of the other bashers in MissM's backyard last week!
That nite, the whole bunch of us went out to a seafood place near MMF's....we stuffed our faces with all manner of fish and then returned to the yard for some stimulating conversation....oh, who am I kidding? we sat in the yard drinkin' and dancin' and laughin' late into the nite....if I remember correctly

I'm having a very difficult time finding the words to describe my visit to the Civil Rights Museum.....but I will say that it reinforced my pledge to never underestimate the malevolence of ignorance.
