our interstate system was designed with a system in mind
all the interstates that end in "0" run east/west
all the interstates that end in "5" run north/south
when you see a 3 digit interstate say 285 - that means it a loop road around 85
so in Memphis 240 is the loop road around 40
so if you think of a loop
if you drive far enough east
you eventually go south and then west
and north
clear as mud
but this has helped me not get lost in unfamiliar cities - many a day

i thought it was even numbers run east/west and odd numbers run north/ south
like 95, 75 , 77 , 79, 81 run north south
