It was truly an interesting experience. I enjoyed the fact that with the exception of the folks at my table, everyone thought I was a Nigerian. Even when dancing, I just followed the movements that the ladies made. It was fun.

Those head pieces are something else. I'm curious as to whether they have to do 'wrap' every single time or is it taken off as a whole like a hat

With some of the materials they don't have to wrap each time. Osas explained that she keeps hers as is and just adjust if needed.



Edited to add: If you look closely at the material on Osas' headwrap you can see that she can wear it like a hat.

My dinner. Now I am very open when it comes to food. I love sushi, indian, middle eastern etc so I figured I would be OK with the meal here. Well I had a few challenges.



I was OK with the rice. The white lump is some type of yam that is pounded together. It was OK, but I couldn't eat it all, even though the amount on my plat was less than half of the regular serving. The orangy looking thing next to the rice is some type of beans that are washed, scrubbed and then pounded with peppers. I couldn't do it. I just didn't like the taste. The chicken was OK. Behind the rice was what Osas referred to as a soup. It was a mixture of cow's foot, fish and something else. The thought of having cow's foot and fish did not appeal to me but it actually tasted good. </div></div>

Lovely Pictures. Having travelled to Nigeria on a few occasions (one longer than desired), I can shed a little light on some of the food. That white thing is called either fufu or Iyan, but simply pounded yam. I took part in making this once, and basically, they take boiled white yam, put a bunch of them in a mortar and pound the crap out of it with a pestle. It's like mashed potato on a large scale but the consistency is very different.

That Iyan is usually eaten with the stew &quot;soup&quot; you referred to...with washed hands. Then the orangy thing you described is Moin moin, made from peeled beans and combined w/corned beef (tin) and sometimes egg. It's a good protein dish. lol!

By the way, the breaking of the Kola nut stuff is usually done by the Ibo group. It's done in reverence to their ancestors and eating it signifies some sort of prayer to them. (can't remember the specifics, but I'll get the info). Because it is a religious ritual; most other religions, especially christians would not partake of this segment, and would not have it at their events. Your friend can tell you the reason for it I&quot;m sure. By the way, coke is made from the Kola nut.

O.k. so I've written enough, I have gotten used to some of the Nigerian food, but my favorite is the moin-moin. Some of their stews are very tasty; like the ones with just chicken. the others, well they're a tough pill to swallow.

YogaGirl, thanks for stopping by and also for your input. Something else happened that night that had me wondering. They had a &quot;pouring of the libation&quot; ceremony after which the wine was taken outside and poured. According to Osas, that was in honor of the ancestors. Since most of the folks in attendance are Christian, I imagine some are still holding on to their old customs.

What fun! I enjoyed that little report Compray..and the pics!

I attended a Nigerian baby shower the other day. It was more western than anything else, but there were a couple of nigerian traditions mixed in the event.

Speaking of money, I was priveledged to attend a Kenyan wedding a couple years ago and this was very mixed, western and traditional. They had the money thing too. Throwing money at the bride, and the women did a traditional dance around the bride while she sat on a chair, adn there were other things going on. It was fascinating to watch.

The other day I was invited to a Ghanaian friend's new baby traditional <span style="font-weight: bold">'Naming and Outdooring Ceremony' </span>its called. I was so disappointed I could not make it. I am pretty sure it would have been an intriguing experience for me.

Its so much fun being around various cultures. So many things to learn...

Nice, I loved your story and the pictures.
Back in the Bay Area, a few Nigerian men fell for me and wanted me to be their 'wife' along with the other wives. I just couldn't get into that but I must say they were more then persistent. One man would drive for hours and when he reached to Bay Area he'd call to say he'd driven all that way to see me. What me????? I never got involved with any of them, but I befriended many and still went to social events that they held. They have wicked BBQ's should you get invited to one.
