I saw her by the cathedral, she seemed to be in her own world....didn't speak English. (They don't teach it in school.... ).

She looks majestic.....

beautiful photos! It is amazing to see the beautiful architecture but it is saddening to see the dilapidation all around...by the vehicles we can tell that the country has not progressed since the Revolution...but it is wonderful to see the spirit in the people despite all this...

Dunno anything about the running out, but it struck me how &quot;little&quot; food there is in Cuba. Market stall with maybe 3 or 4 products.....when I would've thought on that island they could just about grow anything and everything. I was shocked to read they import 80%(!!) of their food. So with food prices going up all the time.....

They get food coupons but a Cuban told me it's enough for a week, whereas it's for a month.

The food you eat there is very bland too. No use of herbs or spices....
Gimme a jerk chicken any day!!!

depends on if your definition of progress is having the latest cars;
they have certainly made progress in terms of asserting their independence; to be blockaded by the big bad usa and still living;
they've sent doctors &amp; soldiers to remote parts of the world; gotta respect cuba; but let me get away from the politics;

my grandparents told me that cuba used to import jamaican cooks the way they loved jamaican cooking...
i guess it must be true

Yes, there is a community of Jamaicans (from way back) in Cuba. In fact, met a rasta who is half Cuban, half Jamaican. He was born in Guantanamo (City!).

What is so funny, went out dancing with a group of rastas, who could be forgiven for looking jamaican, until they START DANCING THE SALSA!!!! Then you know for sure they are Cuban!!!

Incidentally, thought they must be dying to visit Jamaica.......this is the answer I got......

Ethnic Groups and Languages

The Spanish conquest eliminated the indigenous people in Cuba but introduced enslaved Africans from the Congo, Guinea, and Nigeria. In the 19th century, Chinese laborers joined the working class. In the 20th century immigrants from the United States, Spain, and the USSR added to the ethnic mix. In 2000, mulattoes (people of mixed white and black ancestry) made up 51 percent of the population, whites 37 percent, and blacks 11 percent. Almost all of the inhabitants of Cuba were born there. Since 1959 racial distinctions have blurred as the Castro government has worked to eliminate race and class prejudices.

The official language of Cuba is Spanish, but immigration has left pockets of Haitians and Jamaicans in Cuba who speak French-based and English-based creoles (hybrid languages created by the mixture of European and African languages). Both English and Russian are spoken and understood in major cities. </span>
