Marblehead to Rockport

Sooo every once in a while, my brother & take Mom on the short bus and take a drive for the day. This trip was not too far. We drove up the Coast north of Boston. Or as we call it here:
Tha Nawth Shoowah

First stop was Marblehead Light. It has been unmanned since it was rebuilt as this tower in 1895


It sits at the entrance to Marblehead Harbor and that whole point is now a park with benches all around. Really a pretty spot.






Poking around we found a spot called Castle Rock.









I wondered if it was named for the rock formation of the property that borders it...

Marblehead is a very old seaport. Some of these buildings date back to the 1600s. In summer it's a hot spot for tourists.




An odd little door on a house situated directly on the road across from the sea. It's only about 4 1/2 feet tall.


Salem... Witch City. Didn't make any stops in Salem, so I had to shoot on the run!

I have been to the witch museum & seen the house of the seven gables and also went thru the witch's dungeon. It was many years ago and I was just slightly well done. But here's so much to weed through and SO many tourists.
Maybe I will do it again someday, or if Nanook comes east for a visit that will be one of our sites to see.

Soooo... passing thru Gloucester pronounced "Glawsstah" the oldest (?) seaport in the US. Still a working town for many fishing vessels and home of the Andrea Gale of "The Perfect Storm" fame.

First monument we see is the Gloucester Fishemen's Wives memorial.

Each of these granite markers has a bronze plaque with the names of fishermen lost at sea.



According to the fisherman's memorial 5,368 fishermen have been lost to the sea only since they've been keeping track in the early 1700s. One storm alone in 1862 took 15 schooners and 120 men. Another in 1879 took 159 men. Between 1860 & 1906 660 ships were lost and 3,880 men died at sea.

And then of course there's the Gortons' Fisherman...

Now up the rocky coast tooooo..... Rockport and Motif#1











Said to be one of the most painted/sketched/photographed motifs in the world.... Motif#1



The original shack blew down in the blizzard of 1978, but it was carefully rebuilt and remains as close to authentic as possible. It's kept free of things like advertising and noticeable wires for electricity.

One thing I love about New England is Granite. My hometown is called Granite City, New Hampshire - The Granite State...
These piers have been here for hundreds of years and are amazingly well built.
love the steps... tho I wouldn't want to have to walk them while drinking.

Sorry I once again did not take pics of our Fried Fishermen's Platters at Woodman's in Essex. Embarrasing amount of food, but I did skip the fries.

Yes it was a little chilly & breezy, but sunny and clear all day. Mom enjoyed it, that's all that mattered. Of course she'd be happy if we took her anywhere. She's that easy to please.
