Day trip thru the White Mountains

Well, it was difficult getting my brothers to stop the bus so *I* could exercise my creativity and play with my new toy!

But I did manage to get a few pics along the drive. Not much of a story, just made a big loop up I93, across the Kancumagus Highway to the North Conway area, then down thru Madison to look at the places they rented for vacations this summer, then down into MA for a seafood dinner in Essex and home.

It was in the mid 80s and no wind. HOT!
Sooo.... the first pic has been cropped to take out most of the dashboard & roof.



The snow capped peak off to the left is Mount Washington. The tallest peak in the Northeast and home of the highest recorded windspeed.


This was one of the only pics I got to take from any of the scenic pull offs.



Lots of bikes out yesterday. New Hampshire does NOT have a helmet law. Sacry ting dat.

First stop was at Rocky Gorge. Love this spot. first time I saw this spot or MOUNTAINS for that matter was when I was about 19 and we drove up with some friends in the back of a pick-up.
I always took my little brothers there when they were kids. Of course, back then they would CLIMB ALL OVER the rocks!! LAWD mi hawt would pound!! This time of year the water is high from all the snow melt. Later in summer, more rocks are exposed.
They say there are underwater pockets where you can get sucked in.







I did put my feet in, and the water was cold, but not as cold as I expected it to be this time of year. It was hot enough for a swim.

we stopped for just a few minutes at Lower Falls. This place is busy nah hell in summer. There are lots of spots where you can go into the river and ride the small rapids into a deeper pool.
I've never done it myself, but my brothers always loved it here. Now all their kids do as well.





Looking back up the highway you see this massive wall of granite.





Imagine all the countertops?!?!

Next we went into North Conway. A busy tourist town anytime of year. A hot spot for winter skiing and also in the fall for foliage. In summer there's all sorts of natural & man made attractions. And of course year round there are the outlets... lots and lots of outlets.



When I first went up to that area, it was miles to get to the supermarket. And it wasn't very super. Now you ca get just about anything you could possibly want. All within view of Mount Washington.



Maple syrup is a big seller in the NorthEast. This is out in front of a farm that sells maple products. I believe it was the house where they first made & sold their syrup. anyway it's cute.

Then it's further north to Cathedral Ledge. It's a 70 foot high sheer wall of granite. You can drive up to the top and park and walk out to see the view. OR you can climb up the face.
It was hard to get a decent picture with the sun directly above.




The road up is VERY steep. So steep that coming down all you can smell is the brakes heating up in your vehicle. My poor brother's van hauling 7 people up to the top! The engine struggled at times.


So then a quick walk into the woods and the view is amazing.









Yes that is the edge of the ledge there... 70 feet down.
I didn't get any closer than that.



That's Echo Lake. It's about 1700 feet above sea level. We didn't go there, but you could see from the second pic someone was swimming in it.


See the likkle white in the upper left in the lake?


A little boy asked his dad why do they call it Echo Lake. He says because it echos... if it didn't echo they'd call it quiet lake. Good answer dad.

Amazing how trees can grow where ever they decide is good for them. This tree was pretty much growing ON the rock. Looks like it's seen some wind over the years.





Look by the tree roots... see the climber?


And another...


There's a little neighborhood of cottages at the base of the ledge. Once the sun goes past a certain point it's like night & day.

Another photo on the fly as we passed a scenic rest stop. Another view of Mount Washington in the distance. Funny seeing snow when it's 86 degrees.

Hi Nylah!! Wasn't it you who went to that lake in Canada where the water was to turquoise? I was trying to remember the reason why it was that color... something about the minerals?

Yup, that is Lake Louise in Banff!

The mineral deposits into the basin is what turns the water that pretty turquiose colour My mind is on the fritz right now but it is a particular type of mineral that reflects the sunlight to create the colour as well.

I just love rivers, lakes and streams and your shots are gorgeous

So the last stop was to check out the rental places. Both rented from the internet so hadn't seen the actual properties.
Turns out both places look great.

First the place rented by my brothers on a big sandy beach with a float and several canoes &amp; small boats. Nice big deck for mom to spend her days on.
There is also a stone fire pit on the beach.






My sis &amp; a friend rented this place not far away.
This place has a lower deck right on the lake. It does have a float but not a sandy beach. check that mound of snow in the 86 degree day!!








And that was our destination and last stop of the day. Unless of course you count dinner. No pics of dinner, but trust me. It was yummy! Deep fried seafood combo plate of clams, scallops, shrimp &amp; fish with onion rings &amp; clam cakes. I couldn't finish. Mi shame so still...
