I didn't spend alot of time in Manarola; I bumped into one my travel buddies and we had gelato together then again went our separate ways. I went immediately to the train station to take the next local to Corniglia on the cliffs.

<span style="font-weight: bold">To get up to Corniglia from the station you can punish yourself by walking, or you can take the shuttle bus. Again, optimistically I started walking...then I turned back and waited for that shuttle.</span>

Being so high up away from the water, Corniglia had some spectacular views.

I didn't do much in Corniglia beyond wandering and taking photos. It felt so good to not have a purpose. I wish could have found a warm rooftop like this little kitty

With the evening coming on, I took the train back to Monterosso. There was so much more to see and experience, but unfortunately we were leaving the next day. One of my friends had also come back on the same train and we went to have dinner at one of the restaurants on the beach. The food was mediocre but the ambiance couldn't be beat.

I hadn't really been keeping track of the date, so I didn't realize it was San Giovanni Battista day, until we saw the fire works. We made a mad dash through the tunnel to the pier, so that we could be right beneath the exploding sky.

It was a magical experience. Definitely among the top ten joyful moments of my life. My friend and I were so revved up afterwards, there was no question of going to bed at that point. So we wandered through the little parkette, and passed by the local "nightspot", and walked by the beach again, and then finally after we had wound down a bit, we went back to our little apartment.

I really appreciate your kind comments Tsmall. Thanks! Vernazza <span style="font-style: italic">was</span> surpassingly lovely. It deserves the hype it gets. The local people I did interact with were a part of the tourism industry, so they were pretty friendly and welcoming (and always appreciative when I attempted Italian!) I saw some fishing and farming (olive groves), but I don't know how extensive it is...I have a feeling the tourism industry gives the most economic support...

You know, even though my brother spent a year teaching in Salzburg, and my parents spent a lot of time travelling in Europe (and elsewhere), I never had <span style="font-style: italic">any</span> desire to go "abroad". Now I'm beginning to question whatever the heck it was, I thought I was thinking. You definitely have a "style" that's magical. I hope you keep posting!

western europe I love, but still trying to drum up the enthusiasm to get to eastern europe

and greece

<span style="color: #3333FF">Back in the day when things were <span style="font-style: italic">starting</span> to change, on one trip my folks almost didn't make it out of Rumania!</span>

What a great trip report and fabulous photos!! Those interior ones of the Alhambra and Sagrada are stunning! As well as the Italian coast - the only place on the trip I haven't been (that part), thanks for the inspiration!

All bringing back memories as I sit here couple hours flight up north on my staycation...
It's as good as actually being there.

I go to spain fairly regularly.. not as oftem as I would like.. one day I may even head to the south at the moment I usually go to Galicia ...
