Glad you're going but can you move that trip up? I mean 2011 is way too far into the future. Can you make it something more reasonable like.. next month?

I wish!! I'd be gone in an instant if I could....but final school exams for my son are due up in June, so before that not much doing 
And summer is too hot....Can't be great travelling in 50* heat and dust.
Anyway, the river trip to Timbucto is only from november - january, when the Niger river swells up enough to carry the big boats (pirogues) up there, still 10 miles from the city. In the middle ages, it ran right up to it, but desertification. Otherwise you have to go overland. Takes a few days... There's apparently an american woman there married to a tuareg and they have a B&B, or hotel and tour guide business.
I think Xmas would be a great time to go, and January, then you've got the festivals happening too, in Timbucto (Festival of the Desert) and Segou.

That's some crucial info right there.
Didn't know the Niger dried up. Definately prefer the boat instead of overland. I live in the desert to driving in the sand is overrated for me. But I still want to see the place.Comment

Climate
Mali has a dry tropical climate, which is influenced by the harmattan (a hot and dry wind) and a monsoon wind (humid wind which brings rain).
One distinguishes three seasons :
The rainy season (from June to October) is the period of agricultural activity ; The rivers are navigable and the landscape becomes green ; the temperatures are supportable (± 25°C, 77° F); the disadvantage is that many small roads are not practicable;
The cold season ( November - February ) is the best tourist season ; all roads are practicable and temperatures are agreeable in the whole country (± 20-25°C, 68-77°F );
The warm and dry season (March - June) is a period of great warmth (± 38-40°C, 100-104°F).Comment

Well, it doesn't exactly dry up but the rainy season swells the river up even more, making it navigable for the big steamers. Kind of like Mississipi steam boats, African stylee!
Well, at least they had them when I was there then, I presume they still do....Comment
