<span style='font-size: 11pt'>Bingo!!! Yuh hit di nail right pan di head. This was the very mindset I was starting the thread with, but realize there are others who may very well not feel accepted in some places they travel and didn't want to exclude them.

Yuh right though, because I LOVE to travel and experience different cultures, but when mi tek a look agen pan mi color, mi seh to miself "Self, wi dowe live in Utopia an is nat everybody gwey glad fi si yuh a dem place." It funny dat yuh mention Germany cause mi did a talk to a fren one time bout visiting and him kindly remine mi seh wi is black.

Unfortunately, the sad reality is, is that the world is somewhat limited to us. Such is life. </span>

That is funny. I've been to Germany many, many times (to visit friends) and I must say that has been some of the most enjoyable travels I have had. Now dont get me wrong, some of the towns I visited were less "welcoming" than others, but I think that is anywhere you go.

The lesson Churchie was that I must always, always be grateful and thankful. That no matter how bad I thought things were, someone always has it worse. That life wasnt about what you had, but who you had. That if I wanted something, I had to work for it. When I did that, it would be more satisfying and fullfilling.

Churchgirl... Wahalla has always made it very clear that he thinks the root of all evil comes from Canada... yet, he has never offered any sound reason as to why. I gave up trying to understand his dislike for Canada many of his anti-"Kanada" posts ago!

That is a very sound lesson Michange, much along the lines of what I try to show Likkle Mo in the travels that we take, as well as in our own community at home.

The lesson of not taking what you have for granted is a very VALUABLE lesson for the youth of today who have so much and typically do so little to "get" those things that they have. (I am generalizing, and I know there are exceptions to every rule). I see how it would be tough for you to go back if the memory is that profound.

Although my daughter loved North Africa and wants to see more of Morocco in particular... she too had a specific place in a medina in Fez, Morocco where a little girl, I would say no more than three years old, approached her and was trying to shove her already chewed gum into my daughter's hand and asking for dirams (moroccan $). I waved her off, and kept walking, and she kept following us and picking at Likkle Mo's clothes. I finally picked my daughter up and walked on because she does not know how to do this on her own yet, and it was very upsetting to her that this little girl who had no shoes and tattered clothes was so desperate. It made her cry and it made her nervous.

When we were far enough away, I asked my daughter what exactly it was that made her so upset (I wondered if she knew the whole story that I did as a "protector" and "watcher" since I travel alone with her and do not do "tours" and constantly watch my surroundings especially with her.) And she has picked up my sense of watching her surroundings also after all. The part that upset her the most was (and you have to remember that we do not speak/understand a stich of Arabic which was all these people in the medina spoke) that it was the little girl's mother who was standing against a wall, shrouded in her jallabah and face scarf's - almost as if she wanted to be hidden or annonymous, and it was she who kept clicking her toungue and words at her daughter to get "dirhams" from us, but pointing in particular at my daughter (who was only just six years old). Likkle Mo wanted to know if I would ever make her do that. She wanted to know why the little girl's mother or father made her try to sell us her chewed, used gum. She wondered why the little girl had no shoes. For her it was very profound and it made her very sad. But it underlined why Mommy (single parent) always works so hard - she realised right there in that alley how fortunate she was as my daughter to have what she has, travel where she travels, eat what she eats, and she prayed and gave thanks better than she ever has that night at our hotel in Morocco.

Michange... I think as awful a memory that was for you, and for my daughter, these are the things that happen for a reason to mold the types of adults we become.

How VISA International came into being — Amazing story

Most of the people who know me understand how I value a good story that inspires and aligns people. I was just reading this amazing book on Managing as Designing which has the story of how VISA was formed.

Here’s what happened at VISA. In the early 1970s, National BankAmericard Incorporated (NBI) turned around the Bank of America’s faltering credit card business in the United States (Hock, 1999, p. 155). Soon thereafter, NBI was pressured by BankAmericard licensees in the rest of the world to do the same thing for them. The problems were formidable. Not only did each licensee also have different marketing, computer, and operational systems, but each licensee also dealt with different language, currency, culture, and legal systems, all of which had to be transcended somehow. A technological fix was out of the question because banks were still using computer punch cards and tape, and there was no Internet. After months of tense negotiations, a meeting of the organizing committee was scheduled late in the second year of organizing. The meeting was to one last attempt to resolve three deal-breaking disagreements. Positions had hardened and the organizers could think of no compromise that had any chance of being accepted.

Shortly before the final meeting, the chairman of the organizing committee, Dee Hock, reflected on how the international group had been able to get as far as they did. It dawned on him that “at critical moments, all participants had felt compelled to succeed. And at those same moments , all had been willing to compromise. They had not thought of winning or losing but of a larger sense of purpose and concept of community that could transcend and enfold them” (1999, p. 245). Hock and his staff hatched a plan for the final meeting. They contacted a local jeweler and asked him to create a die from which he would cast sets of golden cuff links. One ciff link would contain a picture of half of the globe and the phrase, “the will to succeed.” The other link would contain the other half of the globe and the phrase, “the grace to compromise.”

When the final meeting actually convened, as expected it was polarized, contentious. The Canadian banks refused to participate and withdrew, and Hock adjourned the meeting midday and said they would reconvene the next morning on order to plan how to disband. Before adjourning, Hock invited everyone to a grand dinner that evening in Sausalito in recognition of their undeniable efforts to try to make the organization work.

After dinner, there was brief reminiscing about shared experiences and obstacles overcome. The the waiters passed among the diners and placed a small wrapped gift in front of each of them. Hock asked people to open the elegant boxes and examine the contents.

He then said quietly, “We wanted to give you something that you could keep for the remainder of your life as a reminder of this day. On one link is half of the world surrounded with the phrase ”the will to succeed“ and the second link is the other half of the world and the phrase ‘the grace to compromise.’ We meet tomorrow for the final time to disband the effort after two arduous years. I have one last request. Will you please wear the cuff links to the meeting in the morning? When we part we will take with us a reminder for the rest of our lives that the world can never be united through us because we lack the will to succeed and the grace to compromise. But if by some miracle our differences dissolve before morning, this gift will remind us that the world was united because we did have the will to succeed and the grace to compromise (paraphrased from Hock, 1999, pp. 247-48)

Then Hock sat down. There was a full minute of absolute silence as people examined their gift. And then the silence was shattered by one of Hock’s exuberant Canadian friends who exploded, ”You miserable bastard!“ The room erupted in laughter. The next morning everyone was wearing the cuff links. By noon, agreement was reached on every issue and VISA International came into existence.

Me too!
But surprisingly it's not the #1 hotspot for pirates. That hounour goes to the Straights of Malacca. But it's a close number 2.

Just a few weeks in the paper read about a cargo ship that went by Somalia and the 30 crew have not been heard from since.
