Thank you for sharing those pics. Santorini (besides Ja) is one of my favorite island so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for showing them. Summer time soon come and this is a place high on my priority list.....and meeting some other boardies in Greece this summer. Small world no?

Goodness...some of those building look like they're about ready to topple down the hillside. Very interesting terrain though, but one of the places that would definitely make it on my wish list. I'm rather curious about Thessaloniki, and some of the other places mentioned in the Bible.

As an aside, is English widely spoken in Greece?

Santorini is famous for a volcanic explosion that occurred about 3 centuries ago - the reason for all the dots of land around in the sea. It is also connected to myths about Atlantis.

It is amazing the way they've built on the cliffs.It's all connected by steps.

The eruption of Santorini in Greece in 1,650 B.C. was one of the largest (VEI=6) in the last 10,000 years.

The Greek philosopher Plato (427-347 BC) describes in his dialogs Critias and Timaeus the disappearance of Atlantis, a circular island populated by talented people of high culture and wealth. Plato's account was originally derived from Solon (640-560 BC), the great sage and lawgiver from Athens. While visiting the town of Sais on the Nile delta, Solon was told by Egyptian priests of the disappearance of a great island empire. The story was passed to Plato from Critias, through his great grandfather who had discussed the story with Solon. All subsequent writings and speculations about Atlantis are rooted in Plato's dialogs. In Timaeus, Plato quotes Critias' account of the legend, as told to Solon by one of the Egyptian priests:

In the modern era, geologic and archeological investigations hint at an intriguing possibility -- that the demise of Atlantis may be related to a catastrophic Bronze Age eruption in the Aegean Sea, which generated a flooded caldera and destroyed an advanced Minoan civilization living on the island group of Santorini.

Yea, definately worth a trip!!

And best time to go (I think)is May/June, before the massive onslaught during the July/August European summer holidays.
September/October must be good too.

(The tourist season in Santorini is May - October. In winter it is dead as a dodo. All hotels, restaurants etc are shut, everyone who works for the summer season goes back to the mainland. This applies to all the smaller islands).

There's an airport on the island, with flights from athens and other places in europe (amsterdam), you can also take the boat from pireus, athens' port. From Santorini you can take a boat to other islands, including Crete.

The foto in the top: I was just walking past this cafe and saw the great shot, so I took it. Don't know the people. So I didn't stop for pastries. They're too sweet for me anyway, they have a lot of turkish type balaklava stuff, dripping in sugar - ugh.
(Give me a chocolate eclair any day!!).

That is so great about Santorini, everywhere you go they have these lovely terrace cafés perched on the cliffs with an amazing view. Nothing better than to hang out, have a drink (& eat) and watch the sunset.............

the bottom picture is actually a hotel (or pension). I love their use of colours there. The way they just paint the whole house purple or blue, or ochre. Makes it so cheery, especially when the sun is shining. Not like here where it's all grey!!!! (to match the colour of the sky LOL).
