So the people have spoken and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has ambled to a nail-biting electoral victory over the People’s National Party (PNP). Andrew Holness and his team have scored an important victory. Apart from the joys of winning, Holness will have other reasons to rejoice. Top among them must be the fact that victory has assured that, for now and the foreseeable future, he will not have to contend with any bruising battle for leadership of the JLP. Had he lost he would have taken the party into another national electoral defeat. You could expect then the long knives to be drawn as the veneer of unity that was cobbled together before the election would have melted as butter in the Sahara. But now he does not have this fight, and the JLP must now settle down to the business of governing the country.
