Appliance Traders Ltd Management Trainee Opal Clarke engages Grade 2 students at the Holy Family Primary School in-between reading Anancy and the Cherry Tree. Clarke and her colleagues from Appliance Traders, as well as ATL Automotive, spent the morning of International Literacy Day 2016 reading with first and second graders as well as donating books to their classrooms. Ahead of the Grade Four Literacy Test, the team also handed over portable bookshelves, furnished with a selection of books, for four classes. International Literacy Day – celebrated on September 8 – was established to celebrate and honour the past five decades of national and international engagement, efforts and progress made to increase literacy rates around the world. It also addresses current challenges and looks to innovative solutions to further boost literacy in the future. This year’s theme was ‘Steps to advance literacy’.
