A dinner reception, Sunday at the Hope Botanical Gardens’ Sunken Gardens, was the cumulative just desserts for the world’s first female master blender Joy Spence, who has contributed over 35 years of her illustrious career — 20 of those in her current title — to heritage liquor company J Wray & Nephew. The evening’s floral tablescapes, vivid in eggplant and bronze, bore the names of international cities, a decorative forecast of an approaching Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum tasting tour to be embarked upon by this pioneering chemist. From the distillery’s extensive portfolio emerged the 25-year-old, limited-edition Joy Anniversary Blend, Spence’s very own orange-peel, ginger and spice ode to her artistic and scientific legacy, unveiled to much fanfare at last weekend’s festivities. Within a verdant scene framed by Premium Bar & Event Services bar service, chef/caterer Christian Sweeney’s fare, and design maven Kaysian Bourke’s event stylings, Thursday Social joins the celebration of a rare industry stalwart.
