Manila, Philippines — Students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, a state university, burn old chairs and computer monitors yesterday during a protest in support of Kristel Tejada, a 16-year-old freshman of the university, who committed suicide three days ago after being forced to take a leave-of-absence for her failure to pay her tuition. The students are blaming the Government for the alleged "commercialisation" of education and, in particular, the "No late payment" policy of the university, which caused students to file a leave of absence if they cannot settle their accounts on time.
