A Sunday Observer story about a policeman who is receiving a measly $315 a month for an injury he suffered 34 years ago has drawn howls of from Jamaica Observer online readers. Sixty-two-year-old Astley Smith was hit from his motorcycle by a police car in Yallahs, St Thomas in 1979, which resulted in him suffering multiple injuries to his right foot (which is now 40 per cent permanently damaged); total loss of use of his right hand, a damaged right eye (vision from which he has since lost), injury to his nerves, and in later years his left hand and left shoulder have started hurting. And, to add insult to injury, he was only awarded 3,786.67 annually, or $315 a month by the Ministry of Finance in March 2009. Here are some edited comments:
